No, it IS NOT spyware

Seabass here with a weekly topic from the support emails.

No we are NOT spyware.

This question gets asked very often in support. Many different types of security applications freak out upon the install of several of our applications. Some have, of late, gone so far as to not label this a "possible risk" or "Threat" but have flat out called our software a "Trojan".

Many of you Veterans of this site know as well as I what the consequence of having major protection software on your computer and running scripts can cause a major headache. This brief message is for anyone searching the web wondering why a huge red flag showed up. The true reason for this is security applications are paranoid and the normal running features of our software make them freak out faster than a Homeland Security agent that passes someone in the airport shouting "Bomb!". Not all our software works this way either so 8/10 times you will not run into this.

For the record there is no spyware, trojan, or virus installed on your computer by installing our products.

If you run into this issue in almost every case you can list Stardock software as the exception to the rule. This set of instructions cannot be legally given out by Stardock support. It would be a large problem if we were supporting what someone else created. If you don't know how to set this application in your computer I am sure you can contact the support of your security application of choice. I am certain this type of question is considered the norm.

If you have any questions or concerns you can, of course, address them here. However for situational questions we will do the best we can with a email sent to support@stardock.com.

Cheers

Drives me crazy that a lot of webmail providers still flag .wba even when zipped.

You probably need to qualify that as "legally installing" It seems several of the warez (torrent) versions were playing hell with people's computers at different times over the last few years.

Yeah, ther's no spyware but the software is like crack!

so either it smells bad,or is rather addicting?

Seabass....personally I have had this happen numerous times and I know full well that there is nothing harmful in the software. I've had numerous cases where skinners would send me their WIP so I could get started making docks for them...but most every time they send them zipped up and they get flagged as having a virus or something in my email. I think it would be a good idea to post some declaration of this on the site somewhere where everyone can see it...this would stem the tide of emails or posts about this. Other sites do this as well. It might also be a good idea to write the anti virus software people and ask them to make changes to their software so this stops happening as well.

Or a Pro-WB WC email account system.

We decided to do a follow up to this. If you have had a specific problem please let us know about it. We will need to know what software you are using of ours and what security application you are using. Any specific error messages you might get as well would also help.

Thank you much in advance!

Actually....the only problem I have had was with someone sending me a skin in progress in a zip file (containing a .wba file). And the thing is...I use MSN and sometimes Hotmail for my email. Through MSN I can download the zip file no problem...but with Hotmail...which from what I understand is "suppose" to be working in concert with MSN I can not access the zip file. In Hotmail it is flagged by TrendMicro (what Hotmail uses to scan incoming email) as an incurable virus.

Oh...and pull your pants up! Your seabass is showing!

I've never been able to send a .wba with hotmail. Always gets flagged as a virus even zipped.
