how about right clicking somewhere else on the windows desktop area,
if I'm not mistaken you should have some options that will allow you to exit

What gadget?

If the right click menu is overriden and doesn't include an option to close and during exporting, it was chosen to have no availability in the system tray or task bar, it is possible for a gadget to have no method to close it.

If nothing else, I would suggest just forcibly closing it through task manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC).

I would also be interested to know which gadget this is that you're running.

Also check your Startup folder, is the gadget in there? Delete it from Startup if it is.

Actually, you can use either CTRL SHIFT ESC to directly access the task manager
or you can use CTRL ALT DEL but you forgot to mention that if you use CTRL ALT DEL you will then have to click on the "Task Manager" button and end the process or program from there.
