Thanks, Vad_M ...

It's often a case that Stardock has been/is already aware of these warez sites, but acting upon their presence is not always straight-forward.  Very often it is a language barrier [I tried Babelfish for Russia once....not the cleverest of translations....].

One 'enjoyable' [?, eh, Larry] episode is with an ISP that allegedly understands English, being based in the US.

When you are obliged to quote the ISP's TOU [Terms Of Use] BACK to their administrators and still get what can only be described as a temporary solution you know you are well and truly behind the Eight-Ball.

Stardock warez is one issue....that impacts on all the legitimate SD users/supporters, however often these sites also host people's skins - an issue of copyright/intellectual property rights that impacts even more directly upon the individual skinner.

Stardock does their bit to deal with the program warez/premium content, and in so doing often addresses individual skinners' issues as a bonus, however the Number One person equipped to deal with a skin's theft/redistribution is the artist himself, as he is the legitimate copyright holder.

Individuals need to apply pressure in these situations as well.

It is often argued that once a copyright holder [artist] is shown to be dismissive/indifferent of/to his property rights in one instance he cannot then later successfully claim them if he so feels the urge/whim.

Anyone finding his/her skins/artwork/property anywhere it should NOT be is obliged to actively declare/defend their rights....

Not at all, Jafo!

Sorry but I was offline yesterday because it was night here...

I don't use Babelfish anymore on the same reason. If you need to read the russian texts I advise to try the Google Translator. I'm sure that it works much correctly.

Moreover I can help you with this if you send me the links. My English is not good yet but it's really better than you may see in the online translators. And I have no any problems with Russian.

So let me know if you need any help or any information from me.

Best Regards.

It's not a problem until it's all over Usenet. Then you can never get rid of it.

So far, not many servers are storing it.

My skins are all over the net without my permission. People have ported my work to other skins without permission. People have claimed my work as their own. I recently had an incident with someone from this site where I asked them to remove a port of one of my skins and they did only from that one site. They still left the port all over the web. Do I have the time to chase all this down? No way. Do I have 5% of the time to spend on the matter? No way. It's a fight a cannot fight.

Besides, being ripped ain't the worst thing in the world.

Stardock recently fought a battle for us skinners and won one for the team. I am sure the site will be back up but for now they are out of business. Stardock does more than most people are aware when fighting piracy.

You can double your losses by fighting these guys too much. In most cases they pop right back up somewhere on the web. All your time fighting was lost. It's a shitty position to be in.

Cheers to Larry and Paul (and anyone else that has sacrificed hair for the battle).

hate to say this, but there pirates will always be ahead of software vendors because they will always have the ability to alter the code to their liking.

yes it sucks to be on the short stick end. but piracy isnt going anywhere, might aswell get use to it.

what's worse than steeling software, is people who buy the academic version of software and use it commercially. If I find anyone doing that I will report you.

If you want to make money from software programs, pay the thousand of dollars not the hundreds, if you buy the academic version you are steeling.
