Sins Beta 3 - Technical Feedback *POST HERE*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 3. 

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 3 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c
  • LAN or Broadband Internet Connection for Multiplayer

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, Sins should automatically generate a minidump file. Please send the generated exception and a DirectX diag report to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com along with a detailed description as outlined above. Minidump files are located in (please note these directories are hidden by Windows):

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire
Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

could the command lag be due to your location where you live? the host might be in a place that has bad hops to where you live.


Dont think it is location.

I had a game today where I hosted with samrec (swiss). I am UK .

He had a really bad command lag that fluctuated between 1.75 seconds to 5 seconds. As I was host I did not have any command lag.

I use a netgear router which is quite modern and uses uPnP . I do not portfoward. Could this be the problem. Quite a few people who have joined my games have expierenced command lag , and many times when i join peoples games i get an incredibly annoying command lag.

(this is AFTER the updates)

I might of found another bug in the game. I had an AKKAN captial ship that increases attack range by 12% at the time I noticed it. and I upgraded my missle technology tree to so it was supose to add like another 8% range or so.. well when I look at the LRMs within range of the AKKAN it still only showed in the description that it had a 12% attack range. Are they intended to not stack? or is it just reading out wrong?

I also had some graphic problems with the game since the update yesterday, It would drop my FPS down to a crawl when there was a Gas Giant planet model being drawn, also when I had a repair platform model being drawn, and when I was zoomed in close to see the jump particle effect. as well as the Trade/Alliance screen being half invisable with lines all over. To fix the problem I found out I had to lower the graphics sample rate down. I had it at 4x. at 2x it worked alot better but still some lag.. then I turned it to the alpha and it works ok now.

I'm now reinstalling Sins, no clue what happened to cause that error. I have the option of skip, skip all, and break -- all three give me a black Sins window with a blue title bar on top, then CTD. (Note: An SDC "reinstall" option would be very nice right about now).

There is a small typo in the Research description of the Kodiaks Interdiction ability, that labels the ships as "Heavy Frigate" instead of heavy cruiser.
Have to check if this mistype occurs somewhere else aswell.

you should just have gotten a mini dump from me. basically the game crashed while in the loading screen. I loaded the same replay twice in a row, other than that I can't tell I did anything particularly stupid.

Trying to load replays from previous client versions does that. I tried that once too. Maybe that's what it was?

Mining Bug

Kar's Cross map FFA vs 3AI. I was close to finishing the bombardment of an enemy homeworld. His builder respawned and purchased a mine on each of the three rocks in the system. My fleet killed the builder and finished the planet before the builder got close enough to start working on any structure.

The problem is that even after taking over this world, the mines are still in the color of the prior player, I can not purchase new ones or destroy his. When I mouse over them, they pop up with my color icon.

Update to Minor Bug,

After I took over the planet, my builder finished the construction started by the former owner. Is this playing out as intended?

The "shift" key appears to be subject to a minor price-based bug -- the buy price for 500 units at 1200 credits per 100 units comes out to 5999, not 6000. Either a rounding error, or some oddity that should probably be looked into.

Another bug in the same game -- I appear to have broken the graphics renderer, as enemy units (and a few of my own) are appearing / vanishing as I zoom in or out. Possibly due to the rather large number of units in the system -- better part of 40 squadrons of fighters, and maybe 40 or so ships.

Good work so far. Games seem to play out fairly nicely.

+ I've never ever had the AI accept my proposals. It's usually a case of wait till they offer one; or you don't get anything.

+ If you change to a res unsupported by your monitor, Sins will apply it and save the settings immediately without a countdown; more or less dooming you to a blank screen until you edit the settings files manually.

+ Krosov bombs seem to be ineffective after the ship that launched them is killed. I'm not sure if this is only applying to the militia since this is the only place I've observed them for beta 3.

+ I had a really odd glitch loading a saved multiplayer game. The server loading it appeared to lock up, and clients connecting to this seemed to get the player select/ready screen albeit with half of it's content missing. The only thing they could really do was quit. Loaded the same after closing the app and everything went fine.

I think that its just a problem with the graphics -- the damage is done when the bomb is launched, not when it impacts.

OK, I have an issue of my own:

One, color issues: the colors "Light Green" and "yellow" are way to close in appearance. Its hard to tell them apart, and if you have issues with color vision already, it becomes impossible. (I happen to be colorblind, and while neither of those are the colors I'm "sensitive" to -- I'm red-green technically, but my biggest problem is with all blues seeming purple -- I still have trouble with similar shades like that.

Second: Leaving the lobbey window open while I ran off for a half hour broke the game. It was non-responsive, the numlock, capslock, and scroll lock keys didn't light up the appropriate keyboard lights, but the windows key could minimize it. I closed the game, restarted it, and ended up with a hard lock -- had to hit the reset key. I think it was because my power conservation settings shut down the monitor if I'm gone for a while. Don't know exactlly, not interested in experminting unless its needed to track down the issue (and if you need me for that, you know where to find me).

BTW, internet based save game loading needs to be worked at. THat is, if you have a person D/C and try to reload the game from an autosave. Doesn't work -- the latest save crashed Multi whenever he tried it, and the Autosave crashed me / Hobo when we tried to enter the game (just clicking on the game in the join game menu did the CTD, without any minidump that I could find -- generic CTD).

Kinda sucks, too -- the game was just getting to the interesting part as I pulled my fleet out of defensive mode and into attack mode (I was going to try and mousetrap Hobo's fleet by attacking it... as it attacked one of Multi's worlds! O.o)

I suppose thats possible -- all three of us were in the same game though, and I"d think the autosaves would be the same across each computer.

On top of that, wouldn't we need to actually join the game before any crashing would occur? The CTD occured when I simply clicked on the game -- which should have just displayed info like the map, number of players, etc etc.

I do not understand why but neither I or my friend can join each others game online. We both have our own copy of the game and have disabled all of our firewalls and forward the recomended ports in the FAQ but it just keeps saying "network error" "disconnected from game server" any help ?

I am using a linksys router BTW.

Check the Beta 3 FAQ -- whoever is hosting either needs to open a specific port (6112 I believe, but you should check the FAQ to be sure) or turn on UP&P. Otherwise, you can't host, and get that error.
