The Advent

Because the Advent will not be playable/released/known until the full release of Sins, it is very hard to say. I don't think it will be like you are thinking. I am thinking more of the abilities they have being used in various ways on the ships ... like weapon enhancement, shield reinforcement, and or enhanced (or just different) radar.

I would emphasize that the only real known facts are these, and they are vague at best. The keys I see are biological integration of neural augmentations, possible collective intellect, and possible psionic abilities. I would extrapolate that these psionic things would be much like some of the existing upgrades for ships that the TEC has. For instance you might train your crew to mentally disrupt the crew of another ship ... but obviously that would be tiring and strategically focused.

I doubt they'll be going so far as to make there be spell-casting in outer space.

Much more likely it will be more of maybe taking control of the enemy's ships for a while, or reducing accuracy of the enemy's weapons, or something similar.

I doubt the Advent will be casting chain lightning or anything stupid.

Taking control of enemy ships is something the advent can do, IIRC capships are immune though, only frigates / cruisers are valid targets. I can't remember if there are any other "confirmed" tricks.

You know as much as I do.

For balance reasons, if nothing else, I expect its either short lived or counterable. Probably a capitol ship power, as well, which really weakens its use. (One ship out of dozens isn't going to shift the balance of power much, if at all, unless its a point-failure because you didn't bring any others).

From the screens of Advent ships we all saw posted they rely on beam weapons more than Tec does.

The Psi ability's i dont think will amount to spell casting in space (LOL @ "magic missile", and "chain lightning"). I think the abilitys will work similar to what TEC already has, but the method will be different. For example the Kol has "Flak Burst" as an anti fighter weapon. The Advent version is "fighter push". I am not sure if it just repels fighters away, or deals damage as well. Other than that there is much we do not know yet about them.

Sssh, can't give away too much  Sometimes we can't remove assets as they are shared so they get stuck around (or we just missed a few) and we don't want to put everything under lock and key because that hurts the modding community. Hmmm, that's a difficult choice.

On one hand we have ignorance. on the other there's third-degree burns, but also the soothing knowledge of great things to come.

I am curious as to why the advent aren't going to be implemented until full release. If they are in fact going to be a playable race than why aren't we beta testing them to make sure we have 3 balanced races for optimal game play experience for full release?

I asked the same question. the reply was that they have internal testers balancing that (*mean*we saw how well that worked with vasari */mean*) and we are just an additional layer. its also possible that it would just consume too many resources at this point.

Eh, assuming they ever got around to doing a fine grain balance. Or, for all we know, some of the better forum people could be getting into an invite-only NDA covered beta test! (./volunteers)

Not sure where this comes from.. I left IRC running overnight and glanced at it briefly this morning and the subject came up, but kryo seemed to deny the existance of such a thing. Granted, it was a pretty quick glance at all the chat, so I may have missed something..
