Sale figures???

I wondered: Anyone has some sale figures about GalCiv?? Brad, anyone? I can't wait to see how well it sold!

Sales figures are being kept secret, especially from Brad. Several eminent scientists have warned that should he become aware of the true popularity of GalCiv, he will gain enough influence to win a cultural victory over the entire planet. This will distract him from improving GalCiv, and we can't have that, can we :)

I guess we'll know when he posts something like the "Frogboys reasons to quit and never work again" thread.

But seriously, I haven't seen anything about the game in magazines or other media here in Germany; I actually saw the game for the first time mentioned on slashdot when it went gold. Without "serious" "media" coverage and shelfspace, it probably won't get so much attention; the top 10 placement on amazon.com (although impressive) could very well be the goldrush by 80% of the salivating masses here that didn't try to kill the order and download servers ten seconds into the day. ;)

I'd say the figures get interesting when retail packages have been locally availabe in the rest of the world for some time, let's say in mid-april.

it seems to be doing well without media hype as all the stores who carry it have none or one box left. Will do even better when the idiot mass marketers start to carry it (one must assume that their corpoorate buyers have some clue even though the sales staff doesnt.) Part of the responsibility of a buyer is to stay current with what is going on in the industry; the responisbility of a typical mass market sales clerk is to get ready for the PARTY they cant wait to go to after work. Kewl Doode!!

I think it was an awesome move to get an ad in that "other" space strategy game. That's how I found out about GalCiv. When I became, ahem, frustrated with that other game I looked to GalCiv for my space 4X fix.

"Boxes not being on the shelf" doesn't always imply that the game is selling well. It was the same situation for Hearts of Iron, a TBS/RTS WWII game by Paradox, but from what I've heard, it hasn't sold very well.

I have been telling people about the game and how much I have enjoyed it. I guess if a few more people did this, the sales figures, whatever they are, will increase. And with that, continued support of the game, and a GalCiv 2. :)

TripGoT is right. retailers put in order for games based on anticipated sales and how much the publisher/distributor paid for shelf space. I saw 20 boxes of Warcraft3 come in, and they all get unpacked and put on the front shelves, while with some obscure game only 1 box may come in and put on the bottom shelf, and that could give you an impression that it'd sold well.

and, so you wan't see as many boxes of it on the shelf, simply because only few units were ordered by the shop to try it and to see how well it sells. sad, but that's how it works.
