Galactic Civilization and Multiplayer

If you are intersted in having multiplayer for Galactic Civilizations (as I am) there appears to be only one option. Do not buy (and hence support) any more Galactic Civilization products until multiplayer is introduced.

I'm not calling for a boycott or protesting Stardock; but the Devs have expressed over and over again that they will not do multiplayer basically because they believe the costs of adding multiplayer will not be worth the benefits. It's not an unreasonable thing to do on their part, granted I believe their polling/market research methods are highly skewed, but the point is no amount of messaging on these boards will change their minds.

I have even pre-ordered Sins of Solar in hopes it bought a lot of Gal Civ with it, but sadly no... it's a slow paced RTS. Nothing wrong with that, it's just that it's not what I wanted (multiplayer Gal Civ). I wish I could un-pre-order, but oh well.

I love Galatic Civilization... bought from Gal Civ 1 through and including DA. But I will not buy anymore of the series until multiplayer is added. Simply taking the current Gal Civ 2 and adding multiplayer would get me to buy a whole new game because the replayability of playing with my friends is what I desire. If there is enough of a financial response, I'm sure Stardock will add multiplayer. But if you want multiplayer and keep buying their added expansions, you are just solidifying their opinion that there is no real demand for multiplayer.

Please don't hate on this post. If you are anti-multiplayer, just keeping buying their expansion and ignore me. I'm just offering advice to the multiplayer crowd based on the devs constant response to multiplayer request. Thanks.

I really would love multiplayer.  I was showing my friend the game and we are always looking for multiplayer.  It's such a shame.  This is such a great game.

I'm not sure if this would help since I don't know anything about the cheat system.  Brad said in his "did you know" thread that you can play a sort of hotseat game...

#5 You can play a quasi-Hot seat game with someone by loading up the game as GalCiv2 cheat (use the cheat parameter).  Then when you set up the game, you let the AI play out a few turns and then have your friend pick one of the races they want to control. Have them select that unit and hit  CTRL-SHIFT-Z.

It might also help to know that you can back up your "My Games" folder (or just the related subfolder) and replace it with one that has the hotseat game.  You can play a turn and zip the folder, email it and your friend can unzip it and play his/her turn.  Then just do the reverse and you have an epic multiplayer game that will keep you in communication for months or maybe years to come.

Keep in mind that the original host's game serial number and email address is embedded in the saved game files, so you should only do this with someone you trust such as a family member or close friend.

If email isn't attractive, a free ftp site might do.  I think I used DriveHQ when I needed a temporary free FTP.  http://www.drivehq.com/ftp/

Limited, but hey, it's free. :)

While your friend is playing his/her turn, you can restore your original folder and play some sandbox games or some such thing.
