Naming Schemes for your ships

So back in my MoO2 days, I knew this guy whom we shall call Andy K. Andy K was annoying as heck, arrogant as hell, and a real pain in the neck, so much so that a buddy of mine created a class of Doom Stars called the Andy K that consisted of nothing but antimissile rockets. When Andy asked why, my buddy said, "Because it's just like you, big, fat, and useless."

That anecdote aside, what naming schemes do you use for your ships? I usually go for more descriptive names like Striker, Fast Constructor, Missile Boat, but in my latest game, I've taken to naming my Tinys "Rabid Kitties," my Smalls "Head Punchers," and my Mediums "Psycho Clowns." Not sure what I'll call my first Large, I kinda wish the name field were longer so I could use Culture-type names like "No More Mister Nice Guy" and "Frank Exchange of Views" or maybe "Aggressive Negotiations" or "Angry Stepfather."

Hello. In addition to a longer name choice, I also think that you should be able to choose what your fleets will be named right after you make them.

Example: you hit the create fleet button, and instead of naming it Yor fleet 562, Yor fleet 789, it would instead name it starfleet 1, starfleet 2, and so on...

I use the template names and designs, and just add to the end based on what it carries and what tier. I consider next tier weapons as the first tier, because I don't even bother redesigning anything with the early weapons and defenses. Lasers are first tier for beam weapons, impulse drives are first tier for engines, etc.

So a ship with phasers, shields & warp drives just uses the template name with L2S2E2 tacked onto the end. It's not creative, but I prefer it to just adding MkII, MkIII etc onto the end. Also if I research a higher tiered weapon than the shield it can be identified easier than using Mk. I also just don't feel like thinking up new names all the time.

I also feel that longer name fields are needed. I would love being able to use more descriptive names for fleets & starbases. Just going by numbers really sucks.

I really hate the default game-generated naming scheme as well. Instead of naming say, the 10th of a certain ship YOU'VE built with (shipname) 10 it gets (shipname) 309 because it was the 309th ship built in the whole galaxy instead of what your own race built. Fleets, starbases, & rally points are all the exact same way and it's quite annoying.

My ships' names differ depending on the race I'm using. For humans, I use names like
F-10, FA23, and C-106 for my fighters, and for capital ships, I name Medium ships after
states and contries, ('Louisiana Class', 'Mexico Class', ect.) my Large ships after Norse/Greek/Roman/Egyptan gods, and my Huge ships after famous military commanders and heads of state. (Patton Class, Jefferson Davis Class, ect.)

For the Yor, I just go with serial numbers. (Y-1, B-78, A-667, ect.)
