Installation Problem Windowblinds 5.51 Enhanced

My problem is talked about (sort of) in a couple threads, but it's different enough I thought I would start a new thread. Hope that's alright

I've been using Windowblinds 5.50 without incident. I updated to version 5.51 by uninstalling 5.50 and then installing 5.51. Uninstall/install went without incident. After the 5.51 installation, I removed the installation skins and added my preferred skins. I also re-set my wallpaper.

Everything worked fine until I re-booted. Windowsblinds 5.51 would not start (most of the time) on boot up. Windows defaulted to classic mode. Windowblinds would run if it was started manually. I say would not run "most of the time" because Windowblinds curiously enough did occasionally start automatically on re-boot. My OS in XP with all security patches up-to-date. All firewall and anti-virus programs were unloaded before the uninstall and install processes were carried out.

Not knowing what to do, I uninstalled version 5.51 and re-installed version 5.50. The re-installed 5.50 version now behaved exactly the same as 5.51. Windowblinds required a manual start after re-boot.

I re-imaged my hard drive back to before the installation. Thinking something might have gone poorly during the uninstall/install processes, I tried everything again. I used a freshly downloaded 5.51 set-up file just in case the original download might have been corrupt. This second attempt yielded the same frustrating results.

After the second attempt, I tried disabling as many start-up programs as possible and rebooted. I thought that perhaps Windowblinds might be running into a conflict during start-up with something else. Nothing helped. One thing I wished I had tried was to install version 5.51 directly over 5.50.

I'm back now to the original 5.50 installation. I've tabled 5.51 until I know what's going on. This is the first time a Windowblinds installation hasn't gone perfectly. I suspect it's a complicated conflict with something on my system. I doubt it's a huge problem or the forum would be going nuts discussing it.

Any one have any thoughts on what might be causing this problem? Thanks

using SDC always works in the end for me.

Guys - thanks for the responses. Please help me understand ... what benefit does one get by using SDC to install Windowblinds? I've installed previous Windowblinds and DesktopX versions without SDC. Was I just lucky to never have a problem before?

Since WB starts manually, but not automtically, and this happens most of the time, but not all of the time, it sounds like something is running that conflicts with the WB start-up. Could it be the Acivation process? The installation accepts my S/N and tells me sctivation was sucessful. Perhaps during re-boot it looks again for activation and it's not finding it? Would Windows start in classic default mode in that case?

I'm very interested in figuring out what's going on. If SDC is THE solution, I'll use it, but I'd prefer to find the root cause first.

Thanks,

"Stardock Central is a program that combines downloading software updates, chat, message boards, and much more together into a single program. It makes it easy to download updates to Object Desktop components as well as access free software and demos."

"Stardock Central is an enhanced download manager that enables users to install and manage Stardock's software products.

As a download manager, it can securely and reliably deliver software content to users. It supports download resume, download queues, and mirrored servers. "

That pretty much sums it up.

not sure if the activation process causes any conflict with run at start - I've never installed an SD stand alone - have always installed via SDC

not sure if any startup manager would (or any programs like CCleaner that have a startup list) since I don't find WB listed in any of those

you can also use SDC to archive apps for easy backup or if you replace your system to move to the new system.

checking forums for the run at start......

1)
open WB configure, click 'view my system information' and copy/paste to here all that shows up

2)
what graphic card and drivers are you using?

My video card is a NVidia 6200 A-LE and the driver is the most up-to-date driver for the 6000 series cards (version 94.24 release date May 31st).

Here's my cut/paste info, though I wonder if it's helpful here? I restored my hard drive back to 5.50 from my back-up image. I don't have the similar data for 5.51 and unless I can get a few concrete reasons why this is happening I doubt I'll try installing 5.51 again.

this was a standalone, not via SDC yes?

Neil posted once, the standalone and trial are the same, just one takes activation the other doesn't.

I have noticed some of the file dates on standalones lag behind the dates shown when downloaded via SDC.

Haven't seen anybody post lately concerning issues with nVidia (once in a while people post in and recommend a rollback to earlier drivers)

I can't give any concrete reasons

since you can restore via a backup image
i suggest trying SDC to download/install the newest version
SDC should detect the one you have installed, you can archive it 1st (sdc will also restore archives), then use sdc to uninstall 5.5, then install 5.51

you can also right click on an app that shows an updated version and do a straight download and archive - then when one is uninstalled, use sdc to restore the other archive - and you will want to reboot after the uninstall and the install

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Yes my install was a standalone. I downloaded SDC. I've got a call into SD TS to find out if there are technical reasons why SDC helps with installs. If I get a technical reason that makes sense I'll try it. I'm pretty picky about not adding extraneous oeverhead. Frankly that's what I see SDC to be at this point. Makes no sense to me why a program that comes with its own installer should require an intermediary installer to do what the program's installer is suppose to do.

SDC allows for management of updates and archives.  It verifies that all the files are correct.

well you you only have one or two apps, standalone is fine

i have the full odnt package - SDC keeps me updated on new betas and new releases - I use it to archive the old when installing the new - if the new turns out buggy for me, I have an easy rollback method

it also comes with a chat - where lots of people have gotten some quicker help than waiting on forums (a lot of devs hang out in chat)
