The 'Best' Race

I'd like your opinion on the 'best' overall race

Each race has its own strengths and weaknesses, some races appear stronger in comparision to others, but when you look at the whole picture the races are well balanced.

This gives the game enormous amounts of replayablity, as you can try many things with many races, and for challenges try things against your race's grain (ex. diplomatic Dregin).

Since each race has it's own niche (ex. manufacturing, diplomatic... ect) the question i'm posing isn't which is the best military race, nor is it which race is best technologically or in the late game, it's which race (in your opinion) is the best overall race . Since there is much variations within a chosen race with racial abilities, so include them in your pick.

For the sake of comparibility, can we assume super abilities are turned on, and i would ask to disclude custom races.

Gotta go with Torian and Thalan a close second. Super Breeder is great. No matter what route you choose to try and win, reaching population totals faster means more money through taxes. Money to buy ships, bribe wars, build social improvements, purchase research from other races, or buy planets. Also helps a lot for replenishing planets after troop transports, or after you invade a planet and win with 150 troops to spare.

I would rate them exactly the opposite, Thalans first, Torian second. Suprehive with the extra range and the faster social production help in early development while saving money to buy ships.

Well, I ran two tournaments in part to get to the bottom of this question.

The Krynn won both of them. My belief for the top three best races in DA (in order) are:

1. Krynn
2. Thalan
3. Korath

Although its pretty close between them. Other races are still strong. That doesn't mean that those three are necessarily the most fun to play as. But your question is which is the best overall... Krynn.

If the Korath get a good hold on the galaxy, there's no stopping 'em! Due to the fact that they have spore ships, they need no troops and it doesn't matter how tough your troops are. That planet is nuked. (Or spored)

In my attempt to learn about the different races, here's what I did.

Taking each race in turn, I set up each game using a medium size galaxy - three random AI races - all of them tough - no random events - no special abilities - slow research - all forms of victory enabled.

This proved to be an interesting exercise. You learn pretty quickly about the strong/weak points of each race.

I was able to win no matter what race I played as long as I took advantage of each race's strong points - this generally meant using a different style of play depending on what race I was. To me that was part of the fun.

Which race is best? Hard to say. The "I want to blow everyone away as fast as possible" player will not pick the same race as the "I intend to survive no matter what other scum is in the galaxy" player.

I like Yor very much as my base for custom : Ion drives from start is great. +production and minituarization bonuses. Barren world colonization is actually quite nice as well, plus slow down of enemy ships in your area . Only prob with them is puny PQ 10 home world.

I like the Alterians and Arceans. One for fast research and people coming to your aid in a war and the other for the first strike ability which kicks ass from the middle of the game onwards.

I prefer the Altarians for their enormous economic potential. In my current game I'm trying to buy the entire galaxy. No shots fired, I hope

Could you go into detail as to how they are better, i've played them a few times but my favourite race is...

Thalans, they get the largest inherent social/military bonus (33% in DA 1.5) so you can put racial points into other categories - Morale, Research and Economics. Thalans start with a 15PQ planet, so you're garanteed a good economy planet, the massive planet also grants some morale boost which is important in the early game.

The super ability is awesome, being able to build a factory in 3 turns on a newly colonised world (after buying the first one) is incredible, it translates into not having to buy a whole lot of factories, meaning you can build more colony ships. Also i think this is tied into the super ability: Thalans pay 144BC for a factory, i haven't seen this with any other race, it is bomb. The miniaturization is also sweet

The cost to build Thalen manufacturing structures is 1/5th that for other races. That applies whether you purchase or build them, and that's why they also take 1/5th as much time to construct as other races take.

BTW, I would imagine that the strategy of using factories to generate research would work especially well for the Thalens. (But I've never actually tried it.)

I just posted an AAR using Thalan and all factories. It does work, at least on Painful.

For me its: (Note: I don't have DA, but have recently ordered it, so I may have different speculations later.)

1. Korx
2. Yor
3. Thalan

The Korx if played properly can have the ultimate economy. If you can balance trade, morale, population, and economy, your economy will soar because you've got trade with others, moral and population for taxes, and economy for aditional $$$, the only drawback is that your military will be a bit weak in the beginning. The Yor I like doing massive production, with some economy/morale weaknesses. The Thalans also similar to the Yor with big production bonouses, but they have both military and economy weaknesses.
The very instant you show your weakness, your downfall will begin!

My favorite races in DA
Are the
1.Torian- and their super breeder ability as it speeds the game a heck of a lot and you never ever have to worry about population numbers.
2.Thalans- because of their cheap factories
3, Terrans- because the super diplomat is basically all the diplomat super abilities rolled into one.
