Books are GOOD for You...

Reading isn't overrated...

I know a lot of people today who hate books...mainly because they can't pronounce big words and they don't have an attention span longer then 5 seconds. There are several reasons to read a book...reports, recreation, research....What!?!? RECREATION!...yes recreation...You never see many people reading books nowadays, I don't really no why. I know most of the people on JoeUser probably don't have this little defect because most of them read and/or write articles...but by chance there may be some people scrolling by and may find this site while looking for porn or something....lol

I'm just trying to enlighten people to read books. They do so much for your mind...like increase you imagination, vocabulary, IQ, and understanding of the written word. I find it sad today when you see high schoolers and up that can't even pronounce the name of a gas station or store product...but when you have people read in class it takes FOREVER on some of the easiest words! I mean you don't have to be a bookworm but try to get a novel in sometime during the year...you'll find its fun and actually enjoyable if you pick the right topic....

One of the things that bug me though is how people who read are often made fun of or questioned on why they're reading...That question is incredibly stupid! Since when has reading become such a rare event that it HAS to be questioned??? But anyway...if you're a person who hates reading...probably because you can't...get some lessons and learn better...you'll find it's a great form of entertainment and can pass time in study hall, DMV(or is it BMV), meetings, assemblys, weddings, funerals, etc. (Well the last 4 if you aren't really doing anything and aren't emotionally disturbed...lol)

I love to read. In fact, even though I have thousands of pages of text to read for each rotation I am on, I always ensure that I have some recreational reading to do, even if it only is 5-10 minutes a day. It is the pressure release valve that I so desperately need, and can work wonders for the mind.

I'm not a great reader, that's why I don't like to. I was always behind in school too, so I decided to try and learn things through other means. So far it's worked, I just need to work on the slacking problem and sleeping in class. Once you fall asleep, reading's all you got and I don't do that so I'm dead. I'm glad you two read becuase I love reading when I do read but I just read so stinkin' slow that I can't read for long without getting frustrated. Good job and thanks for doing what you are...

And you started off so well too, not. Dude, have you ever thought that this isn't something that comes easy for all of us. I love to read, like I said before, I just can't read as fast as I'd like and I have been reading at about the same speed since 5th grade. It's not because I'm not smart "Shane" and you know it! I realized this wasn't quite directed towards me but I have taken offense now.

Again, I have tried these strategies out. I just can't read well enough. I mean, I can read well enough to get through life and all that stuff but I do not have the speed required to get from the top of the page to the bottom in under 15 minutes. Maybe you should stop being so narrow minded, dude. You're my find and all but I'm not liking this attitude you have towards everyone.

And, if someone can't read than why would you try to tell them to learn in a written format?

Once more, you are off on your accusations. I have, arguably, a great imagination, a pretty good vocabulary, a decent IQ, and an, also arguably, very good understanding of the written word. Being able to read as much, or easily as you isn't all that counts in an education my friend. There's a lot of other factors too.

No offense, but who would you say has a "better" imagination? Me or Death by Beebles? Or how about me or just about anyone at our school? You know I have a very healthy imagination even though I don't do much reading outside of JoeUser.

Geeze Capt. Think you posted enough??!! lol j/k. anyways.......I can't say I don't like to read, but I can't say I do. Really I don't like reading, unless its by a certain author by the name of Lurlene McDaniel. Her books are kinda like the romantic love story kinda thing. But they mainly focus on kids and teens that have cancer or certain diseases that struggle to get better and live a good life. It might not sound good from my describing, but I suggest you check 'em out. You might be interested, you never know! So yeah Zoo I'll argue too along with Capt. But as he said, no harsh language please. It might sound shocking, but I'm trying to cut back on the harsh words myself. hehe. Thanx for letting me know about sam's site too. I was wondering when she was going to get it up and running.

I think people that make fun of others because they read should not upset anyone considering that it's blatant ignorance. I totally agree with you, people should read more often, it gives you more depth as person and will only open your mind to all aspects of life. ~Capt.-Trust me, Capt. you weren't one that I was focusing on...I know you're not the greatest reader but I'm talking about REALLY bad readers...that are dim-witted....As we can tell by your vivid imagination and numerous articles...you can see that this criteria isn't directed at you...per say...but if you want to argue your points go right ahead...

~carebear-You illistrate my point about not enjoying all books but certain ones that you like. I'd also like to welcome you to add any more thoughts to my little thread here...

By the way, I'm not addicted to books in case some of you are wondering...I just enjoy a good novel every once in a while...
Trust me carebear and Capt. you're definitely not the kind of people I have in mind...(I know you've suffered through class while someone takes and hour to read a paragraph...well mabye Capt. WAS one of those...lol)

~Capt.-Yet again you prove my point, I'm not saying you have to be a Victorian scholar, but just to get better or at least TRY....and as a result of trying you've certainly gotten better...and for that I might give you a cookie or something sometime...lol...but seriously there are still people that couldn't read a travel pamphlet for their lives...my articles are never all inclusive...I'm not writing a Bill of Rights here...so if you're reading this, remember I'm not talking about everyone...I usually try to state this in most articles. I do not condemn people for just reading slowly...it's not be ABLE to read well when they've had a proper school experience.....

Yes, I used to be one of those people that took for ever to read one itsy-bitsy little paragraph. I could read really fast if it was just to myself but never outloud. I've over com that now and don't have that problem. We're reading Romeo & Juliet in english class and well you know all of those weird words that they use that nobody in class has the slightest clue what they mean, but supprisingly i'm the best at reading that stuff out loud and getting all the pronunciations right out of my english class. That kinda shocked me when I was told that by Mrs. Mendenhall and some others in class. But yeah I think i'm farely good at reading now. But I'm still not a big fan of it. Except for when it comes to the author that I mentioned earlier.

Yeah, when I read that in 9th grade I was Romeo. Whether you believe it or not, I was the only one able to read ALL of the names and words. I'm not a "bad" reader, I'm just a slow reader. Silent or aloud.

Hey hey, representing the Romeos.

I, too, consider myself to be a very poor reader. (By the way, I think I know where this article is coming from...don't listen to Brent, he's an ass more times than not, not being about 15 minutes of every day.) It's kind of weird too, because my mom and brother are very good readers, but I guess I didn't get those genes. They both told me, "Read it like a line at a time, read it in chunks, not every word seperately." Well that doesn't work for me. I have to read every word or else I don't understand what's going on. I can read slow and understand every detail that's happening on that page, or read fast, stop, and wonder what the heck I just read. Also, when I skip over a part of a book, something I just wanted to skip or something ahead was more enticing, I get this nagging feeling in the back of my head that I missed it, and I can't turn the page until I go back and read the line or so that I skipped. And that annoys me very much. Most of the time I'm trying to read somewhere that isn't conducive to fast reading too. And when I am in a quiet place, I'm tired and my legs start to twitch, telling me to take a nap. Tis a vicious cycle.

I usually stumble over words when I read aloud, but I really don't mind reading. I actually want to read some of these books that my parents and brother talk about, but I can't bring myself to read them or finish them once I've started them. Someday...Someday.

Ha! you were romeo? lol j/k. Yeah I have the great role of Friar Lawrence. Some preist guy that has a major role. It's so funny to look at people's faces when they see someone who can get the words right. lol. Not to be mean to Jessica but it's so funny to hear her read since she has an accent. hehe. There are a lot of words with R's in them so it's hard for her to say them. The other day she had a part and forgot she had to read that day so when we got to her it was silent and nobody knew who was supposed to read. Then finally she started reading, and to make matters worse she messed up like crazy! omg, it was so hilarious.

Well, don't get me wrong dharma...I like Shakespeare and all...it's just that when you're in school and go over and over and over and over and over...etc. The same Act for at least a weak you get a little annoyed with it....We're doing Caesar right now...and it is a good story except we're just spending WAY TOO MUCH time on the stupid insignificant details....we've beed on it for about a month and we're just finishing Act 4!!!!!!!!AHHHH....I've already had to go over Romeo and Juliet last year about a million times...and even if you really really like something...it gets boring after a week on just one little scene...or detail....

There's a little thing called dyslexia. My best friend has had it since he was a teen. He still can't read or spell worth a damn.

As for Shakespeare, I love A Midsummernight's Dream.

Many people have trouble reading the written word due to dyslexia or other problems. For those with that problem they should check out audio books. There are many thousands of audio books out now that are not abridged and are read very well. Try www.audible.com Link; they have a subscription service. For $20 per month you can download 2 unabridged books per month. Or you can also check them out from your local library for free.
