DA V1.50X2 CTD and SDC repeated login failure

I've two problems, the first is a saved game, Gigantic galaxy, that crashes continously 1-2 turns into the game

GalCiv2 Dark Avatar v1.50X2

The second problem lies with SDC. I noted in another thread about using SmartException, so I went to grab it, and its not listed, only one demo program is listed under "Free Stuff".

This is likely because my login failed.

I get intermittent login failures (sometimes it logs in just fine). I'm currently getting one right now and its my guess that's why I can't find SE.

"Would you like to configure your stardock.net information now?" - I updated my account information without error, and tried logging in again. Login failed.

Email Account Info: "Your account is not found, please try again"


The Debug.err information. Out of four crashes in a row (and reboots in between) only one debug.err file was generated.

Heh. Naturally, as soon as I post, both problems go away.

I shutdown SDC and, upon restarting it, got an update message. After the update and subsequent restart I logged in fine. Of course, it may simply be intermittent again.

Grabbed SmartException and ran it - now the game doesn't crash. Yet. It already has progressed several turns beyond the point it crashed every time.

For now a big NEVERMIND I suppose. Otherwise if it reoccurs I'll try to get the proper info gathered and submitted (to: ? )

I sure would have liked the ability to edit the above post, too

Out of four crashes in a row (and reboots in between) only one debug.err file was generated.


There's only the one debug.err file, and it is overwritten each time you start the game.

7900/50 GX2 cards are known to have driver-induced issues with the game. Some users have found that enabling the hardware mouse cursor option, disabling anti-aliasing, or running in single-GPU mode can help, if that is the cause of your crashes.

I've read the post about the 7950 GX2, but never had any issues with the game to date. The driver's the latest and greatest.

I'll remember those tips in the future if the crashes reoccur with any great frequency, thanks.

I had SmartException running and "got lucky", the game crashed very quickly into it. I've sent the report to support. In the meantime I'll try the tactics suggested.

You're not crazy if that's what you're thinking. It's started to happen to me only I can't seem to get a debug on it. I do however actually get a window that opens on the desktop after the crash that states something to the effect of failure to write to memory... I have it written somewhere. I didn't have this issue prior to the last update but now it happens consistently but at no certain time. It might have to do with my settings and how far along in the game I am (I can't remember the year but every tech is researched and it's just a matter of declaring war), gigantic w/ all abundant. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the RAM but then what do I know. Seems one gig isn't enough anymore and virtual isn't helping regardless of whether I double it or quadruple it. If I can log a debug I will send it but it's odd that this only started happening since the last update. Until I can get more info, if anyone has any ideas they'd be appreciated.

Well, I've gotten four "0x4fe7725b" exceptions within an hour. This is getting tiresome to say the least . I turned on the hardware mouse, and turned anti-aliasing off and it still crashes. I suppose trying the single GPU mode is next.

EDIT: Single GPU mode didn't work, nor did stepping the game resolution down to 1024x768. It failed almost immediately after hitting the Turn button.

Well, I've gotten four "0x4fe7725b" exceptions within an hour.


I believe my problem is pretty much the same as yours. The "0x4fe" whatever not being able to write to memory... damn I wish I brought the paper into work with me. I'll definitely post the error message when I get home but don't know if I'll have the time to play in order to duplicate and possibly pull a debug. I've had smartexception running when these things have happened but for some reason it wasn't pulling a debug file on it. It is however the first time I've had an onscreen message stating what the issue is... strange.

I have it saved now where it causes repeatable crashes immediately after hitting the Turn button. It asks me to upgrade a Influence starbase, I do so, then as soon as it brings up the GNN screen, crash.

I can also monitor RAM usage on my keyboard's LCD display, it hovers around 50%, so I don't think I'm running out of memory (I've 2 gigs)

Okay, this was very odd. Using a trick I read about on the forums, I scrolled to an absolute empty area of space (actually outside the galaxy's perimeter). I earlier disabled the movement of the constructor so I wouldn't be dragged back there, then hit Turn. The "trick" is actually used to speed up turns for those playing gigantic galaxies (so they don't have to sit there and watch enemy movement, I guess).

The game flickered and "crashed" at precisely the same point, opened up a "this application has encountered a serious error" box - but the game kept playing. I moved a few ships then immediately saved it. When I hit the "report" button on the windows dialogue box it then shutdown or released the game to exit.

I'm just hoping I got past a crash "bump" and can complete the game. Regardless, I'll of course continue to keep tweaking configuration settings and hope I can get a stable GalCiv2.

Just to be clear, the only difference I have from you is I've had no issues with SDC at any time throughout this. I myself didn't think I was running out of RAM even though I only have 1GB but with this game you just never know. It happens on gigantic and huge galaxies and doesn't seem dependent on frequency of planets/stars/anomalies type settings, although I usually only play with all abundant on gigantic. As I said, doing this from work for me is pointless so when I get home I'll post what my error message said... at least maybe we both have the same thing with regards to that.

You very well may have. I know that I can still play the game I'm in even though it randomly crashes... so long as I save at some point prior (just luck in choosing when to save). Sometimes I can only squeeze a couple more turns, other times a few dozen or more until CTD. Always the same error however. This is the one game that I am trying to finish but it's happened to about three others, which I've just deleted. Tweaking settings doesn't seem to do much one way or another in my case, but by all means keep on sharing your info. Maybe there's a way to work around it instead of waiting for the devs.

I manage to play a few turns but run into more crashes. I'm paranoid, so I not only quicksave it a lot, but also had autosaves set up for every 4 turns. I thought maybe the auto's were killing it, but still crashed when I disabled them.

The problem with SDC is unrelated, I should have made two posts.

I'm just messing around trying to get it working. The game worked fine, though, until 1.50X2 - very, very rarely did I get a crash.

SmartException has about 12 crashes logged now. I don't see the point of mailing Stardock with every one, they all fail at that same address, but I can if they request it.

Well, I was pretty discouraged, this gigantic Painful game I had in the bag, the save crashed right when hitting the Turn button, every trick I tried to get it "over the hump" failed. If I can't play on gigantic that's it for me, competing on the Metaverse is what remains to keep me interested.

That said, 1.50X.072 fixed it - that time, that is. Its crashed twice in the last 4 hours or so, which is still a hell of a lot better than once every 4-5 turns.

Kudos for the crash fixes, and here's to hoping they'll get eliminated entirely!
