I have DA and would appreciate some help on a few issues

GalCiv2 Forums
Okay, downloaded last night after finally figuring out where to input my authorisation code (Am I the only one that struggled with this?). I think it is far too early to make any meaningful judgements on the expansion pack, but I have run in to a couple of issues which hopefully someone can help me with.
1) I am taking a significant performance hit over regular GalCiv2 so that as soon as there are more than a couple of ships on screen my framerate degenerates into a chuggy mess - its like playing Civ4 all over again. Before the expansion I only took a performance hit on large galaxies towards the endgame, so what the hell has been done? I thought the devs said the new ship models were less CPU intensive, so does anyone have any advice on how to up performance at all?
2) I am playing on challenging and the AI seems pretty clueless. Now challenging was my default on Dread Lords so unless I've suddenly become a much better player (unlikely, I kinda suck) I wonder if there's some sort of bug which has nerfed the AIs capabilities. The most notable failings are that no trade ships are being built by any opponents apart from minor races, and often I'll find multiple ships on the same tile which haven't been combined into a fleet. Now I am happy to crank the difficulty up, it just seems odd that such basic errors are made on this diffculty. Has anyoene else experienced this?
3) This is not DA specific, but is there any way to check how much effect my economic starbases are having on my trade routes beyond the % number on installing a module? At the moment I've no idea how much of an impact they are having.
4)If I don't manually edit starting races (which I don't like to do as I like random opponents) what are their initial setups? I mean stuff like political party, aggresiveness etc. Does it vary?
5) Are mega events supposed to be very rare or is this a feature that isn't quite working right? Similarly, is there a way to make barren/radioactive/etc. planets more common? At the moment I only get 1 or 2 per galaxy as opposed to dozens of regular inhabitables and uninhabitables. At the present ratios it makes researching colonisation techs a bit of a waste of money.
Any help appreciated. This reads a bit negatively I know, but I'd rather try and take a positive step to improve my gaming experience before I start shouting 'OMG this sux' all over the forum.
