Krogoths kicked my ass all weekend!

Hi

Anyone heard of the old game total anihilation?

Love that game myself. I have been playing the mission called 'the krogoth encounter'.

to win that mission on hard and without hiding behind dragons teeth is tremendously difficult.

I have been beaten about 5 times in a row this weekend and i'm an elite player!

Usually i cannot keep the energy levels up and thats always why i loose... it's fun because the enemy airforce really hits you hard and almost constantly, then there are some majour ground assaults to distract you just long enough so you cannot prepair adequate Krogoth defences.

finally beat them.

What clinched it was a couple of sentinals in key positions where the enemy hover planes attack. keeping the hover planes out of my base was all i needed to get that extra edge.

Got about 10 Krogoth carcases just outside my base so far, soon they will block access and i can go on the offensive.

Didn't Chris Taylor make that game? I've never played it personally, but I am looking forward to Supreme Commander.

Heh, I was a BIG TA fan - TA was a real fun game to play, so many units to field! (I usually liked playing it with a unit limit raise of some sort, to like 500 or 1000 units...) For a time I even wrote TA fiction under the alias "Mr. Armageddon."

Krogoths were nasty huh? Just walking fortresses of death essentially. XD

I'm desperately trying to get TA and its expansions from my brother before SupCom comes out.

I can't imagine trying to defeat 10 Krogoths without very carefully moving my commander for d-gun purposes.

I cant either, mainly because if you take your comm on a d-gun run against 10 Krogoths you will not survive. The death explosion is too powerful. At best, you could hope to take out one.

1 krogoth is the commanders limit, unless you can get him repaired real quick. 4 or 5 annihilators do the trick nicely, but you must have spotter units - lots of spotter units hehehe.

I built my annihilators along the ridge of the raised platform, then i built dragons teeth to close off the north entrance forcing the krogoths to come in from the east.

I don't know who made it. What is 'supreme commander'?

Yes with the power of today's computers you can really go crazy with the unit limits, although the path finding is still pretty crapola! hehehe

Yea krogoths are seriously kick ass. In skirmish mode i usually use them to replace defenders and other base defences. Not much point in using them to attack unless you want to finish the game! Although with the metal maps, usually the AI can beat back a krogoth attack.

In all these years, i havn't found any games that measure up to TA in it's category.

Considering how old TA is, why am i still finding myself wishing these new games had this feature or that feature present in TA??? Are game developers ever going to 'get it right'?? or am i going to be stuck with TA forever?

Well, Chris Taylor was the mind behind Total Annihilation (or at least one of them, another being Clayton Kauzleric). He also later worked on the Dungeon Siege games under the label "Gas Powered Games." Supreme Commander is his attempt at creating, essentially, TA 2.

I wonder if he decided to go with three races because of the fact that so many RTS games have upped the ante with three or more races - Starcraft came with three, as did Warcraft III, and of course the Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War series has come to seven...but it doesn't compare to Gal Civ II's virtually UNLIMITED number of races, going to ten races on one map, each with almost entirely different units. About the only games to come close to that are titles like Empire Earth II, and even then you only get that because all of the sides have the same units with just one or two "unique" units.

But anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing how Supreme Commander turns out. With any luck - and plenty of it - it may turn out to be the true spiritual successor to TA and a smash hit.

Of course, this DOES get me thinking - did any of the Stardock guys have a fondness for TA? Or were they more of the Civilization and Master of Orion crowd? Maybe even a few RPG and MMO junkies! (More RPG than MMO, I expect, considering the time constraints of the work.) Might give us an insight into what sort of myriad influences worked on the good ol' Gal Civ II team!

For me, i think Alpha Centauri is what inspired my fondness for Galciv.

TA on the other hand is a completely different type of game to galciv. TA does not inspire me with other games of it's type, instead i would call TA my benchmark for which all other such games fall short.

Now i'm having trouble with another basted hard mission in TA the core contingency.
'securing the atol'.

This mission, you have a random chance of loosing, depending on weather or not the super huge squad of torpedo planes attack. Once those guys decide to hit your base, it's all over! Even 10 or 15 defender NS wont stop them, there's just tooo many.

If the big squad dousn't attack early on like it sometimes does, i can usually get some defender NS up and surround them with dragons teeth. Good protection against torpedos but i still havn't figured out how to stop the navy from killing them.

Since the torpedo plains nail all my assets i send out to try and defend my base.

Usually i can win this mission on hard if i use torpedo planes as well but that just makes it too easy. I'm just trying to figure out if it can be done without them but it is freakin hard!!!

havn't beaten em yet.

I can concentrate on air defences and just manage to survive the torpedo bombers, but then i get killed by the navy since i have no naval defences.

Or i can divert recources to try to build naval defences but then they just get killed by the torpedo bombers.

I wonder if this mission is 'impossible' to win on hard without using torpedo bombers??

Hearing all this about TA again makes me want to reinstall and fire it up. Also have TA2:Kingdoms. Fun game just totally different than the original.

I managed to nab a disk of one of my mates, just to say, wow. I can agree with your statement, shame I have to give it back really.

This is true, though Gas Powered Games swear blind to the contrary.

I played TA kingdoms extensively before. Yes it is a good game but somehow it just dousn't inspire me to come back for remaches like TA original does.

There are plenty of TA fan websites out there, i'm sure they can advise you on where to buy or download a legal copy.
