WinCustomize Loading

I find it very difficult to use this website whatsoever, half the time you click on a link, say Misc Icons or Wallpapers or whatever it is, it takes FOREVER and I do mean FOREVER for the page to load(if it loads at all), then you have to sit and wait for the icons to load, its just umbearable... Its great you've put so much attention into the detail of the new layout, but if your not going to fix the ability for somebody to actually view the website, whats the point?!?!

After what happened after the 2005 Site came on I've been quite happy with the speed. Seems to be flying from here.

I've got the same problem here, and left a similar question on another post. In that post there seemed to be indications that some people may experience problems using Firefox (which I do use). As described above, I get a couple pages loading great, then get a page that just sits for seconds, even up to a minute, with no progress in the loading bar indicator. I often give up on that page and and try something else.

There was a mention somewhere (another thread, I think concerning bugs in the new site) about clearing the cache, but that doesn't really seem to have any effect. They stated that the site is designed to work for IE and Firefox - the little I've use IE it does seem faster in handling the site, but I'd prefer to use FF (which the site should be able to handle).

If you have a problem, please state exactly what time you had the problem so that we can look at the logs.

My guess - database.

Got the boss on the problem!

It seems to happen all the time.....sorry, more correctly, at any time. I use to attribute it to busy weekend traffic, etc., but I don't think that's it. Right after I posted the above reply I went to "my Page", looking at "my replies" and opened up a few of those past posts. A couple were instantaneous, then I got one that "hung" for a while (30-40 seconds?). Sometimes the loading progess bar does not even come up on the screen, or it shows up but empty for many seconds, then the page might load instantly.

I am entering this using IE. I just went to FF and went to the site. It took maybe 20+ seconds to open "my page". But then whipped right through "my replies", brought up the logon gallery instantly, same for a favourite skin, then waited 58 seconds for the feature skin to open!(the progress bar showed empty, then after 58 seconds it filled in a split second).

(The other post I had entered much of this same info into was "FIrefox and Wincustomize star ratings")

Thanks for the attention - anything else I can help with, let me know...

As I said in the reply to the other post I just mentioned, I'm not past accepting that it might just be FF settings or such, but it seems not there are more than a few of us who need to figure that out, if it's the case!

....last entry 'til someone asks for more info....

Just whipped around site using IE, no delays (of more than a couple seconds or so).

Then did the same for FF - generally split second, but about 35 seconds to bring up a misc. icon, and about 25 seconds to bring up the "forums" from the main title bar (but then moving around the forums was fine).

I've noticed that too, IE7 seems to render the page pretty fast and seamlessly, but in Firefox it takes longer and is kinda "chunky" in the way sections and different elements load. Not enough to make me actually switch to using IE more, I'll still stick with Firefox, just would be nice if the same behavior happened in both browsers (the faster load behavior of course).

I seem to be having the same problems arcturus13 described. However, this doesn't happen every time I try to get to the forums, or brows different galleries, just every once in a while. I also use Firefox, and the home page always loads fine. Then I try to brows the forums or take a look at the WB gallery and WHAM!.... the lag hits like a sludge hammer. This happened to me this afternoon when I got home from school, but right now, every seems to load in a snap. For the most part, the new site seems to load faster than the previous version, but when it decides to act up, I'm left hanging for about a minute or more. I don't know what the problem is or why its happening, but it sure is annoying.
Don't get me wrong. I'm very pleased and exited about the new site and the design. I just couldn't help but pointing this problem out. So, thankyou so much for listening and for what all you guys at Stardock/Wincustomize have done for me and the community so far.

To be honest I've never used Internet Explorer I find FireFox so much better... Seems like a bunch of people who use FireFox having the same problems, main page loads up just fine, haven't had a problem loading up forums either, just seems when I go to load up like misc icons section or the bootskin section or any of those sections and search through the archives that I will get huge lags on the next page loading, anywhere from 30 seconds all the way up to like 2 minutes before the page loads, usually i just give up in frustration because its not like its just when the main misc icon section loads, but every time i go to go to the next page (yes sometimes it does load just fine but when it lags its just like constant frustration of trying to get the next page to load)... Seeing how nobody using internet explorer seems to be having these problems, I would definitely have to say the problem lies somewhere within FireFox and how its responding to the code of the webpage... It's a real shame too because in my personal opinion FireFox is a great alternative to Microlames IE...

Wow just loaded up wincustomize with internet explorer 7, the difference between ie and firefox is absolutely amazing, when i clicked on misc icons, page loaded in a matter of seconds (firefox even when working properly takes like 5-10 seconds to load the page and icons load up like individually) clicking on next page button loaded up the page again in a matter of mere seconds compared to firefox where if working will again load in 5-10 seconds with each icon popping up individually and if not working properly will just hang and progress bar not even move for minutes....

So there you have it, its official in my mind, somethings up with firefox and how it handles the code, I know there are differences between ff and ie especially in displaying things for instance in html if your trying to display something at a certain x y there is like a 20-25 pixel difference between the two... Perhaps there are differences in the way each handle loading a page and that something in the code makes firefox have problems loading...

Just tried using IE7 on this site. It won't let me log in. Keeps saying my username and password is incorrect. One difference I did notice is that the galleries are displayed down the right site in IE but not in Fire Fox. I can access the galleries through IE only. It must be Fire Fox having difficulties. I use it as default browser because it's much faster than IE and usually has no problem anywhere else.

Mine loads faster on Firefox.

I just loaded Firefox...and popped into here....no troubles at all.  Speedwise, I'd say they're much of a muchness...

So Jafo....

You've hung around here long enough , would you think maybe our FF settings are to blame, and what would they need to be set at? Anybody have any other ideas? It doesn't seem to be internet or computer problems when we all seem to get good loading much of the time, but then at certain times it "hangs". Frogboy seemed to be indicating it might be the site itself?

It's better than the old site regardless: IE or Firefox but it ain't perfect. What is?

ok...I was experiencing the same problem with firefox, but IE just flew through the site, then I hit the switch on the KVM and browsed the site from the Mac using Bon Echo (firefox optimized for the mini mac processor) and things smoke! No delays no lag time...so it seems that the firefox problem is PC specific...

I get on here early in the morning around 4AM...and the load times vary from one second to the other. The main page loads ok most of the time, but then it gets a bit wonky. I can be going through a library or forum fine one second and the next it just hangs...sometimes for about a minute. And the "settings" link looks fine in IE but in FF it sets down over my avatar.

I had mentioned it earlier, FF and IE display things a little bit differently, I know specifically if programming in html and setting x y coordinates that there is about a 25 pixel difference between FF and IE, that could be the reason why the "settings" link looks fine in IE but FF sets it over your avatar, if a moderator reads this its probably an easy fix, I can only go by what I know for html and setting x y coordinates but when doing that there is a way to make IE display things one way and then in same statement make an exception where firefox ignores what IE display settings are at and follow the next commands to display different coordinates..

I acutally don't think the difference is browsers but rather something to do with IIS and the database.

My theory is that it's IIS. What's happening is that the new WinCustomize is basically a web application and that IIS is crashing regularly. If you happen to be on the site when it's restarting itself you're waiting 30 seconds for a page to come up. Otherwise, it's really fast.

IIS...crashing...restarting...oh my!
I don't know what IIS is, but crashing regularly doesn't sound good. Is that normal? Anyway, I haven't had a loading problem for the last few days, but who knows when lag will strike again...
It partly may have been the internet itself. Last weekend there was no internet at all where I live. Some big SNAFU happened at some local ATT/SBC communications tower, and that really sucked.
Anyway, I just wanted to say I haven't had any problems recently (fingers crossed).

That does seem to be how the situation usually happens. For myself, the usual page loading is fast! It is just that once in a while where it "bogs" down, then it zips right along again - IE stills slows down, too, just not as much as FF. The new site does generally seem quite a bit faster than the old.

I read into this that what you describe is the the "norm", the way to expect the site to react? If that is the case, I've got no problem with that! I just like knowing what to expect, and I just want to help out where possible.

Thanks for the attention to this issue, and thanks for the great site.
