Ah, just submitted my best Metaverse game ever.... wait, what?

Today in the wee hours of the morning I completed my most recent game, finally finishing it after quite a while playing. At the end my turns were taking 15-20 minutes each because of the sheer number of ships I had spread out attacking the few remaining civilizations.

Then, finally, the last empire surrenders to me in May of 2229, and I am victorious. My score for the game comes up; it's my highest ever by a very slim margin. My previous best game scored 56500; this one scored 56750, a mere 250 points higher, but it's still better. I had been ranked as high as #20 overall before, but had slipped to #24 because of other users submitting games. I eagerly looked forwards to raising my overall score and rank.

I submit my game. I go to the Metaverse web site, eagerly awaiting my new rank, whatever it ends up as...

... until I look and and see that my score has instead dropped by over 40,000 points.

What the hell? My score was over 140k before. I submit a game that scored higher than any of my other games. It's not cheat-flagged or anything. It ties for most difficult game so far. And now my score is just under 100k, putting me in 47th place. Which isn't horrible or anything, but I'd really like to know what kind of sense this makes. I could understand my score and rank dropping if I submitted a losing game, or a worse game than I had previously played which could very well lower my average, but neither of those applies.

Anyone?

I have the same beef here EarthSquirrel.
Looks like your score was cut in half when you submitted your 6th game, same thing has just happened to me.

I had a score of 38375 after 5 games and just added a new one, 9K. Now instead of a total score of 47375, I have a score of 23687.

I just want to know if there is going to be break points like this every 5 games?

Besides, it seems to be a dumb way of keeping the scoring down. If you want to make it interesting, just let us keep the top 10 scores and add those together. or do an average or something like that.

There was a recent Metaverse score recalculation. I don't know if they have finished yet, but eventually things should be sorted out.

Scoring was recalculated when 1.1 came out, lots of people experienced there overall scores dropping when they submitted a game or 2. Its effected all metaverse players the same.

There are two problems with that being the issue behind the odd scoring behavior.

First, I had already submitted a 1.1 game. The game in question was my second after 1.1 came out. My previous high-scoring game of over 90K had been reduced to somewhere in the 20k range.

Second, the change happened instantly with nobody else's scores being affected at the same time. I have two computers, and I checked my score on the one that I was not playing my GC2 game on. It was at the previous 140K level that I mentioned. I then submitted my score on the other computer. I went to the web site on that computer, and my score was now just under 100K. I went to the rankings list for the 21st-30th place players, and I was still on it. If you haven't noticed, rankings are only computed at scheduled intervals. I don't know exactly when, but at some point during the day, or possibly more than once a day, everyone's ratings are all recalculated at the same time. So there had not been an overall re-rating, which they would do if everyone's scores were being updated. The score listing went something like 22nd - 147k; 23rd - 145k; 24th - 99k; 25th - 139k; 26th 138k. Pretty obvious that my score had dropped without anyone elses changing at the same time.

I'm inclined to go along with Jarod here and guess that at the magical level of 6 games, scores get calculated in a different way. I'd really like to know why.

Well, if it helps any, when I hit six games, my score was cut in half as well, and is still being calculated as half of total of the games. I don't mind them trying to balance things out, or whatever they are doing, but just cutting the score in half after a certain number of games seems a bit too arbitrary.
