Logitech mice--problem with MIDDLE mouse button

I've seen it reported before , but no solutions. I have two computers, both having Galciv 2 loaded, one having a Logitech MX1000 cordless laser mouse, the other having a corded MX510 optical mouse. The first uses setpoint software, the other uses mouseware. In both cases, if at any time during the life of the mouse, I reset the function of the middle button (for example, to play BF2 or something), and then I reset it back to default, I completely lose the rotational fuction of the depressed middle mouse button. I can't get it back. VERY frustrating. I can't build my ships without the rotational function of the middle mouse button.

I use the shipbuilder alot--or, I used to, before this happened. Help! This is a game killing bug for me, and I don't anticipate being able to order expansions etc if I can't get it to work, since it ruins my experience completely.

I read a few other old posts about the same thing, and figured out that using the setpoint software, if I reprogram the the scroll wheel button to function as "middle mouse button" instead of the default "zoom" it works.

So, I solved the problem. Hope this helps for others with similar problems anyway.
Bring on the expansion packs...

The only problem doing that is that you then loose the wheel for zooming...
Personnaly, I use SetPoint to make a side button (4 or 5) as the middle mouse button. I zoom more often than I rotate the camera. It is a bit different, but it works...
That is, until I can stop myself from playing the game and spend some time programming my Nostromo

Why would you ever change the driver assignment? If you wanted mouse3 to be a different function, change it in BF, not the drivers. I have a pair of MX700s and have no problems of this nature. I stay as far away from the terrible mouseware setup thing as possible. All modern games detect mouse1-5, so why set those buttons to 'l' or something?

But my mouse has 8 buttons... ^_^

I have a MX1000 and have set the "program selector" thumb button to work as middle button in setpoint. Works really well in GC2 and really useful in firefox too.

Actually by resetting the scroll wheel as middle mouse button, I did not lose the scrolling zoom function within the game.

I might be able to help with this one - is the setpoint icon displayed on the system tool bar? If it is - right click and exit setpoint software, when you run Gal Civ after it should be fine.

I have noticed that setpoint seems to do this to just about every game I've played!!

i have had the same problem with mouseware, the other day I just reinstalled the drives and restarted the PC 2 times (once after deinstallation, the second time after new installation) and now it works as it should

It's a problem with the setpoint software. I have a MX900 that did the same thing, I set the middle mouse button to *gasp* middle mouse button (or some such, not at that comp atm) instead of whatever setpoint had it set at. It was causing problems with all sorts of games and with Opera, but set how it is now it works like it should and has the full standard functionality.

My scroll wheel is set to "Other/Generic Button", and it works for the rotate, scroll and zoom like it should.
I have the cordless Logitech MX Laser, by the way, and use the SetPoint software.

It would seem to be a problem only with the logitech mice, and I encountered it with both Setpoint (for the laser cordless) and Mouseware (for the wired optical) mice.

Thanks for the suggestions. Maybe my fix wasn't optimum, but at least it works now. I may post this in a logitech forum, since it seems to be a problem with more than one type of game as well.

Don't bother posting at Logitech: they have terrible product support and their mouse drivers have been terrible for a decade. I doubt they'll be interested in changing.

ive got a logitech g5 mouse and ive set the tilt wheel to a key stroke e.g left on wheel is 1 on keypad. but ive found that in game this function doesnt work sometimes. it had me confused for days as to why it worked sometimes and not others but then i discovered that it was xfire which has been causing my problems. when turned on it somehow disables what ive set my mouse buttons to do.

does anybody know how to fix this cos its REALLY annoying and hampers gameplay considerably. pls post back
