I'm trying *really* hard to be forgiving...

I realize that the game just patched to a Beta version (er, oddly enough, that is somewhat akin to a constructed building being upgraded to a blueprint concept…), but there are a few details that I feel could stand a bit of attention:

Trade Routes. I have one, am allowed 5… but when I attempt a second, I get the ‘You already have the maximum allowed…’ bit. This has only happened since the game I began after the Beta patch.

Fleet movement. Not sure if this is a bug, but I’ve noticed that a fleet that travels to a stardock gets most of it’s movement back, where as a single ship does not.

Ship range. Sometimes, when starting a new game or loading a saved game, I cannot move my ships—even the ones right next to my starting world. It tells me I need to look into cryro-sleep (the out-of-range message). Keep in mind that *no* ship movement is allowed… even within controlled space.

Apollo 13. At times when loading the game, or playing the game, I am suddenly given the option to send Microsoft a nice little error report. The abends executed by the game have increased substantially since the latest patch… despite the fact that I have A) more than adequate hardware, B) Very recent drivers (i.e., Mobo, Video, Audio, network… including OS & DirectX updates), C) Nominal heat, D) no detectable spyware, adware, viruses, HDD errors, or non-system background apps and E) 14 years experience as a certified computer technician. True, I could set Autosave to have a go every turn… but the load time for a saved game gets to a point where I can go for coffee, scan through my latest TiVo recordings, check my voice mail, jot down a few ideas for the latest Visual Basic program I’m playing around with—and still have more than enough time to read the word ‘loading’ as if I were just learning the English language, and having extreme difficulty with vowels.

Also… though they are not ‘bugs’ per se, I would like to venture a few gameplay suggestions:

Ship design. A way to upgrade a ship design without starting from scratch would be nice. Perhaps, for example, when you select a ship and hit ‘Upgrade’, you can start with all of the existing components, and just remove and replace the item (s) you want to change. I mean, the only difference between the ‘Upgrade’ and ‘New’ options is that the former has the hull size and style already selected. This equates to wanting to add new missiles to an F-15 by pulling the engines, missiles, bombs, fuel tanks and structural components… then putting everything back exactly the same save for the new missiles.

Ship upgrades. Great idea, lousy execution. Well… to clarify, the current method works fine in early game, but becomes mind-numbing tedium once the feature becomes vital to strategy. Allow me an example: You research a new engine, and modified an existing design to incorporate the advancement. Now, you need to locate each one of your 35 existing ships, disband them from their fleets (or launch them into orbit), move them off to the side so each is alone in space… **then** you can upgrade them one at a time. Afterwards, you get to reverse the process, and re-form your fleets. A ‘Mass upgrade’ option would not be such a bad thing, which leads me to…

Mass commands. Under attack and need your shipyards to get some ships out? Lagging dangerously behind technologically? Social construction not keeping up with your tech upgrades? Why not have an option to set **all** planets to a ‘focus’ (or to remove the ‘focus’ from all planets).

Fleets. The only thing I would like added here is a troop count for fleets containing transports/colony ships.

Rally Points. Some method to set a planets’ rally destination without having to select the planet, open the build ship screen, then select the ‘Rally Point’ option. Being able to do this without burrowing down would save a good deal of head-slapping accompanied by the infamous Homer Simpson "Doh!!" (I.e., having your new ships wander off to the old battlefront because you got too caught up in your conquest to micro-manage can be a real proverbial cold shower on a hot date). I see in the manual that there is reference to keyboard shortcut commands pertaining to Rally Points (‘T’ and ‘X’)… but since pressing ‘T’ only accomplishes a quick game exit and an offer to send Microsoft an error report, I have been reluctant to see what the ‘X’ actually does.

Don’t get me wrong—I love the game. That, actually, is the motivation for my whining. Not since MOO 2 have I enjoyed a 4X game so much. I guess I’m just seeking further justification for the insane amount of time I sink into this game.

I think the ship design upgrade thing works, its a button somewhere. That used to annoy me too. Now my ships show up with all their parts and i just replace what i need to. Hope this helps.

If you want to upgrade all ships of a type at once you can tick an 'upgrade all' box in the upgrade window, it's towards the top left corner.
You might still need to move all your ships into open space first though, I'm not sure. But it still cuts down upgrading time.

With the bugs... well that's why it's a beta. Report the errors so that Stardock can fix them. If you aren't prepared for errors, roll back to 1.11.

You can upgrade all ships of a type at once- check the 'Upgrade all ships of this class' box in the upgrade window. Unfortunately, some people have said that for some reason this is more expensive than doing each one individually, though I personally haven't tested this. It is also worth noting that you can upgrade ships without removing them from a fleet by using the fleet manager window (introduced in 1.1).

If you want to 'focus' all your planets, use the overall spending sliders.

Upgrading designs- go into the options menu and uncheck the option to remove functional components on upgrade (or something similar) and you'll find that your concerns have already been adressed in this area.

Agreed.

But that option already exists!

Still learning some of the buttons and navigation. Cut some fellahs a break and be a bit more detailed when you wish to provide learning for some of us old sea dawgs.

Thanks!

Uhh, click the rally point button next to the image of the planet once you have the planet selected.

Star Dagger, I never bother to read any of your posts because dark green on black is not all that pleasant on the eyes. You may want to reconsider your choice of text colour

I'll go through these and help out the best I can

Bug 1. "Only 1 out 5 Trade Routes working": Can't reproduce this if anyone has a saved game where this is happening, please send it to gc2bugs@stardock.com.

Bug 2. "Fleets that travel to a Starbase(?) get most of their movement back, single ships dont": Technicially, unless that Starbase has speed modifiers equipped, the ships movement shouldn't be effected at all by a starbase. Is this what's happening, cause I'm having troubles getting this to reproduce as well. Please send a saved game if you could

Bug 3. "More Crashing": Please install "SmartExcepotion" (a free program in Stardock Central's free section) and run that while playing GC2. This will catch the address and call stack of the game when it crashes so we can have an easier time tracking down the faulty code.

Suggestion 1 "Upgrade Design Options": Theres an option that lets you toggle how upgrade works (keep all components/ keep just jewelry), plus with the clear button at the bottom of the screen I'm sure you can get the results youre asking for.

Suggestion 2: You can do mass upgrade now right through the ship details window (click on fleet>double click on ship in context list>press upgrade>select "upgrade all ships of this type"). It'll be expensive, but it should definatly work

Suggestion 3: We've added focus options to the colony management screen, making it easier to toggle these, and technically "all planets focus on X" is the same as adjusting your spending rates.

Suggestion 4: I know it's not on the Fleet context window (which is just too full as it is), but double-click on a fleet and that total will be displayed on the right side in the "Fleet Stats" window.

Suggestion 5: Yeah, just use the rally point button on the planet context window...much less head slapping But getting back to your Bug3, could you send an error report when the game crashes from pressing the 'T' key. That...um...really shouldn't do that.

Thanks for all the great feedback. Hopefully this help out, and if you could boot up SmartException, we can dig a bit deeper and see what's causing those crashes on your machine.

Thanks man!

Is there any reason why upgrading many ships at once should be more expensive than upgrading them all individually? This is very annoying. For large upgrade orders, the expense can be 1.5* or more what it should be, virtually forcing the player to find each ship and upgrade it by itself.

BoogieBac, you may want to check Smartexception. When I used it to catch some crashes a couple of weeks ago the address it told me to send the files to was gc2bugs@stardock.net instead of .com.

BoogieBac, can you comment on why it is so much more to upgrade all ships at once than to do them one at a time?

Thanks BoogieBac... I *really* appreciate the info

As for...

... I tried it a few more times, and discovered that if you hit 'T' without selecting a planet, the game crashes.

BTW we're fixing the "multi-ship" upgrade cost problem for v1.2

Sorry about that guys...I guess you can see we don't upgrade our ships much
