Bite Me, Eidos

As I promised them, just spewing this as widely as I can across the net...

---

I'm through with Eidos, just as I have been previously with a number of other companies. And, just as I have been with the others, I am going to be very vocal indeed in as many forums as possible about the reason for my discontent. Eidos has insulted me, Eidos has, and
perhaps most of all Eidos has underestimated me - and all of the others like me.

In the laughably foolish hope that you might briefly inconvenience a novice software pirate somewhere (for about as long as it will take him to consult one of his slightly more experienced brethren), you've treated me and other legitimate, honest customers who put down their
cash for one of your products, as a criminal.

A few weeks ago I bought "Tomb Raider Legend" - it sat, still shrink-wrapped, on my desk for a couple of weeks. Today, I finally had a chance to play, with a long holiday weekend ahead. I went through the install, clicked the desktop icon, and waited for the opening screens. Instead, I got this:

"Please insert the original disc instead of a backup (1000)."

I've tried repeatedly, and can't actually *play* the game I paid for. And even if I wanted to hop through the support hoops that *might* enable it for me, I'm not likely to get any help now, this weekend, when I do have the time to play.

I'm holding my 100% genuine disc, manual, and case in my hand right now. But I won't be for long - I'm taking it back to the store I got it from, and I'll be getting my money back from them, and from you. You don't deserve it, and you don't make anything I need enough to just placidly accept for this kind of treatment. And I'm not alone. Congratulations on solving the piracy problem - by doing your damnedest to do away with customers altogether. And as a side benefit, you're probably driving a non-trivial number of them to don an eyepatch themselves - hey, if I'd just *pirated* your game, I'd be playing it right now! Sadly, I'm just an (ex-) customer.

Bite me, Eidos.

One assumes your CDRom is not altered in any way...no firmware or interfacing software to 'trick' authenications?

Things like region-freeing a DVD using such proggies as 'DVD Region and CSS Free'.

If everything is above board then either your machine is old and/or faulty or the disk is.

Not necessarily a valid reason for a dummy-spit...though it IS annoying....

My wife had similar issues a while back with Tomb Raider (Chronicles, I think) for PS2...
Loaded brand new (legit) disk in non chipped PS2....won't load....reset PS2, checked disk for damage/imperfections...reloaded, no go. Wife returns disk to store...clerk replaces...loads it in PS2...no go wife retuns to store. Clerk gives diatribe about tampering with PS2, chipping, etc, said disk therefore will not work. Wife argued machine original, not chipped....clerk continued PS2 related argument, advised to buy PC version to avoid conflict....wife buys PC version.

Still no go...installed game on machine....clicked to play...."please insert original disk." message appears...uninstall/reinstall failed to resolve...wife takes disk back...clerk again replaces disk....installation again failed...disk returned...clerk tries to convince wife PC has illegal circumventing software...replaces disk with advise to uninstall said illicit proggie....wife returned with disk, still no go, takes back for refund....clerk tries to sell another version of same game for platform we do not have

Had I been with wife upon 1st through 5th return...said disk woulda finally become frisbee material ...aimed at clerks head in hope of removing top of skull to perform lobotomy to remove bullshit factor.

Needless to say 'that' game is not part of our collection....but together we went to another store and purchased a rare collectors edition, boxed set of Myst, Riven, Myst Exile, Myst Revelation in a fancy box that looks like one of the game books....all's well that ends well

Jafo, there are no region or other hacks on my DVD drive, nor any similar software running on my AMC 3200+ processor PC, which I built about a year ago. My machine should be more than current enough to handle the game. We're just being abused by Eidos, and companies like them. I've demanded (and gotten) refunds from a number of other companies that have treated me this way, especially without any notice on the box or in the documentation that their software was going to phone home, install hidden spyware, or otherwise abuse my system. And I've never bought another product from those companies (even though in some cases, I'd been using prior versions of the product for years). If enough of us stand up and announce loudly that "we're not gonna take it", this kind of crap will stop.

My first ASUS P4P800E Deluxe MoBo came with a driver CD with no drivers on it.

It had the install/setup/autorun menu....and nothing else.

It happens.

Maybe your game...or a batch of that game was similarly affected.

Quality control might be crap...but actually that is all it is, and not really a copyright issue at all....

Bought a copy of XP Plus a while back and kept getting 'place disk in drive' error messages. The store replaced it and new version installed without issue...clerk said that a few others had been returned faulty at that and other stores...so bad batches do happen.

Should anyone else have this problem, there is a patch out that will supposedly fix some of the problems.

They have a rather strange installation procedure for XP/2000. This is what they say.......

"The installation program will run OK Windows XP/2000 and should install normally. Once the installation is complete exit the autorun menu by pressing Cancel. You cannot use the Autorun menu to Play the game."

This link mentions running the game in Win 98 compatibility mode if there is an error saying you need a "New" disk. I don't know if they are referring to the same thing or not.

Maybe this will help others in the future
