Tech Requirements Question

Hi There all.
Is there a site/download which allows you to enter a ship or improvement etc... and then reports back to you all the techs you need to research in order?
In Civ 4 all you need to do is set your "goal" on the tech screen and you'll automatically research the techs required to get there?

any help appreciated...

PS is there a Gal Civ 2 version of Javascout anywhere?

The tech tree in Gal Civ is linear, so this really doesn't seem to be a priority to me.

The only exceptions are:

- Ethical techs. If you want the Good defences, evil weapons or Neutrality learning centres, you have to research Xeno Ethics first.
- Core ships. But you are much, MUCH better off designing your own. Seriously, don't waste your time with core ships.

Exactly. I've said it before and I'll say it again, core ships=steaming hunk of poo.

Everything is linear. One tech, one item kind of thing. The tech's themselves actually tell you if they unlock wonders (I think)

Saving that, use the galciv2 wiki, which is linked to on a sticky.

Thanks, Actually just discovered the "Galactopedia" thats a great help too.
Better start designing my ships now though...

I wish they had made the core ships at least, you know, 75% as good as personal ships, instead of about 30% as good. The way it is they just clutter up the shipyard and have to be obsoleted every game when I would rather delete every single one.

While everyone is here, could someone tell me what tech you need to get Devastation Beam (+7 Beam) on a starbase? I'm not installing the Galactopedia on my personal computer.

The Core ships aren't worse as such. If you happen to research the exact right techs in the right order, they're just as good as a custom ship. But you'll always have an extra level of miniturisation, or the next level up of laser, or whatever, making them constantly obsolete.

Devestation beam... I think it's one of the early weapon techs. Space Weaponry or something like that. If not, look further up the Beam weapons tree. It should be listed under 'New Starbase Modules' when you look at it in the tech screen. You'll need to have installed Battle Stations MkI as well of course.

Maybe it's because I trade for techs, but I've never seen a core ship that wasn't at least 1 less power and 1 less speed than a custom ship, starting with your colony ships and constructors. Sometimes I build 8-power ships and the computer is recommending something with 3.

i second that.

the only core ships i ever use are the colony ships and constructors, and very rarely frighters. the only reason i ever use them when i do is that they're usually the cheapest things on the market.

I don't even bother with those. The original colonizer doesn't have much range or speed and the constructor's speed sucks (unless the UP helps you out).
