strange damage values

I attacked a Drengin Defender A:(0,0,0) D:(1,0,0) with a A:(1-0-0) D:(0-0-0) cargo hull interceptor. The Defender doesn't have any weapons, so it's a won battle, but I get some weird damage values in the combat viewer:

0
5
1
1
1
1
0
5

Anyone know what's going on, and why it's displaying the occaisional 5? Anyone else see this? Again, this is from a ship with 1-0-0 attack.

This behavior occurs consistently with these ships, and a 5 is always preceeded by a 0, it seems.

I'm not sure, but I think there's some sort of critical shot chance that is applied if rolled. I've seen some figures similar to that in my games.

is this that "luck" factor?

You think thats odd???!?!?!

The other day I had a 36 shield ship go up against a Beam 5 ship and was getting hammered for 5 every few shots. Something is a bit fubar'ed there mate.

Imagine my surprise when my battleship barely survived the encounter with a fracking fighter.

Two Ships both with low Attack and very high Defence would battle in a neverending loop, because no ship would be able do penetrate the others defence. I think this "lucky" hit was implemented to prevent such a situation (and is also the reason why Defence systems take more room than Offence systems).

Eh, my hunch is that this has nothing to do with luck or with a "critical shot," since I've never seen a hit above the attack value in battles where each side has a non-zero attack. I think this has more to do with how they're displaying the damage... something's going on, because with 1-0-0 attack against 1-0-0 defense I should be hitting for 0 damage 75% of the time and hitting for 1 25% of the time, and I never see a 3-1 ratio of 0's to 1's when I replay this fight. The 0 damage values are, I think, getting 'compacted' for display in some way that results, perhaps buggily, as the occaisional report of 5 damage.

Anyone know specifically?

Right now, from any 'official' sources, there is no such thing as a critical hit. The whole 0-max damage system pretty much replicated the miss, scrape, direct hit, critical (max), so there's no reason it should suddenly do 5 times it's maximum damage. I would definitely classify this as a bug unless a dev comes in here and start explaining it. But frankly, I don't see why this would be needed.

IMO, they need to do some further explaination on the damage system, and allow us some way to mod how it is calculated. Although I suppose modding that will be far off... since doing formulas is a little harder than just reading in a tag.

What really irritates me is when this happens:
Me: Stingers + shields
Him: doom ray + no defense

Me vs him: 0
Me vs him: 0
Me vs him: 0
Him vs me: 10 - fighter dead
Me vs him: 0
Me vs him: 0
Me vs him: 0
Him vs me: 10 - fighter dead
Me vs him: 0
Me vs him: 0
Me vs him: 0
Him vs me: 10 - fighter dead - Fleet destroyed - defeat

I realize OCCASIONALLY I'll miss completely and that OCCASIONALLY they'll get in a full-on hit. And, of course, we all know "The AI doesn't cheat (TM)". When the above battle happens repeatedly, I begin to wonder how random the random "roll" really is.
