Nobody loves me!

What factors influence relationship status?

I'm trying to form alliances with other races, but I can't seem to generate a "close" relationship with any of them. I'm conducting a lot of trade, giving away techs and ships and even planets, but still everyone is at "friendly." What gives?

Check the report screen, see where your lacking. If it's military, build some ships. If it's diplomacy, research some. And sometimes it just takes a lot of patience.

They respond well to pain, so a show of force usually sets them on the straight and narrow
Also, compare your alignment to there, could be that your just plain evil (but most likely they are ).

I have no problem. I made an alliance with someone of total opposite alignment.
The key is to study diplomacy trade and social things that benefit their economy.
Soon when a larger force attacks theirs, they'll come begging for help and jump at the chance for an alliance.
If their society is much stronger than yours, don't expect them to ally with you- instead you should be prepared for an attack.

Even when my militaty was much larger than the attacking force, of a "close" neighbor, I've had the AI refuse an alliance. In fact, I've never had an AI offer me an alliance.
