Resources --- Overpowered?

I've been playing the beta and stumbled across the bug that allows you to buy resource starbases at very low cost. It was getting towards the end of the game and I had tons of money with nothing to do so I started buying up influence starbases. With the 1 I had and 3 more I bought, I immediately started taking over planets. 2-3 per turn and even capitals. Now I'm a person who likes equality in my games and try to set them up so that no one race has an unfair advantage at startup. With common planets and common star systems, everyone usually gets enough decent planets colonized that they have a fighting chance. But the resources can't be changed and getting lucky enough to get some close to you can make or break a game, especially if you play a non-conquest game (and starbases can't flip like planets). Should their impact be toned down?

No. They shouldn't. They start off with a 5% change, that's not overpowered. They get stronger obviously, but why wouldn't they? I can win without a single resource at Intelligent. If you dislike them, turn them down.

No nerfing, please.

its how i always win an endgame, build up an economic might. then buy ecomomic mining starbases. The every outher resorce, this stunts everyone else and gives me a massive boost. Then i buy regular economic starbases then influence. with in ten turns i have the entire galaxy under my influence.

its far esier than any other method, saves the mopping up

I buy all resource starbases anyway, so it dosen't really matter to me where they are placed initially. Resources only really start to have a dramatic effect later in the game and by that time it's your own fault if you don't own them all.

hmmm, easier to mop up the galaxy, wise choice. I should try that instrad of extermination, why kill them when you can enslave them...

One of the first things Brad talks about in this journal entry is that he is making the resources worth more to the computer. Hopefully this fixes the "bug" you are talking about.

The military, approval, research, economy resource are fine as they are. Since even with those bonus another player can still try to match without the bonus.

But the influence is another story though. I find it way too hard to counter a race with this resource that most of the time the only solution is to wipe out that race.

Resources are undoubtably very powerful, and the computer will sell them to you for far too cheap. Other than that, the only possible balance issue I have with them is that as another poster mentioned, Influence Resources are probably a little too powerful. If you grab the only two in the galaxy at the beginning of the game, you are almost guarenteed an easy win on any difficulty, particularly if you manage to rush-build the Restaraunt of Eternity.

I'll second those responses. In short, resources are not overpowered. While we're on the subject.. what's up with the minors ?? You can't buy (or try to ) a base from them cause it won't show up in their list. If a minor has it, need to declare war and smash theirs/build yours or genocide them then build over..

What is overpowered is the amount of people insisting on nerfing trade. I may be on the minority side on this.. but more and more I'm starting to give the finger and hit 'clear'/'done' and not trade than give a buttload of crap thats worth way more than what they (the aliens/AI ) are giving up.

I guess I was focusing on influence resources since those are the easiest to see the impact. With the beta bug, I bought 2 in one turn. The next turn my influence went from 52% of the map to 68%. Planets started falling like dominos and within 15 turns I was at 75% and just hitting TURN button to win the game.

I've started to change my strategy a bit to rush build a constructor early in the game to ensure I grab some of these.
