Enhancement: Preview of Starbase Range

Determining the range of a starbase before you build it

Hi Folks,

I bought the game 2 days ago and even though I cannot access my CE-Stuff or even upgrade (German version ...) I really like this game.

What I was about to propose is, that when you build a new starbase there could be some popup like:
You are about to build a Ceti Alpha V (your Colony)
Ceti Alpha VI (Altarian Empire)
build | cancel

Additionally the range of the new starbase could be shown.
That would really help a lot determing whether a spot is suitable for a starbase or not ;)

Ben...

What you want is in V1.1. The constructors will show a faint area of 'affect' just like star bases so you can position them to the best effect.

I agree (with Ben). The circles are shown now (before you build), but I'm never sure whether a circle will affect a planet or not. Is it OK if just one pixel of the tile is in the circle? Does the center have to be in the circle? The whole tile? How can you even tell if a tile has a corner-pixel or two in the circle?

Actually, it would be better just to highlight the affected tiles, rather than highlighting a circle, so there is no uncertainty.

Why not just save / try it / reload -then come back and tell us what you found?

We'll be waiting

I believe it has to cover the entire square.

If I may use this topic for another suggestion:
it would be great if we could see which starbase/miningbase we are expanding.
Possibly a minimap in the dialog showing the position.

ooh yeah.
I second that!
Actually there's a few screen that could use a mini map.
The planetary screen for one.

Because most starbases dont give any benefit until they have had a few modules installed as well. So its not enough to just build the base and go look whether it affects a certain planet on the edge of its influence.

Heck, I've been trying to test this and I've had problems seeing a clear indication that a starbase even affects a planet right next to it. I checked the planets production, research and economy before adding some +5% and +7% modules to a starbase and there was no chance in the numbers afterwards.

So its not like its easy to check.

If you go to the details screen for a planet, you can see what starbsae bonuses are affecting it.

Like what jasper have said, you wouldn't know in the details screen until you add a module. I think 1.1 final should hcange the highlighting ciricle to highlighting tiles.

I second (or third, or is that fourth now? oh w/e) that highlighting affected tiles would be a much better idea than a circle. I know that in 1.0X, if any square is even partially within the circle of a starbase, it gets benefit. But apparently this has been changed in 1.1 based upon what people are saying. *I* however, have had no problems with this what so ever. With the new 4 starbase/sector limit, and none of the 3-space rule, it has been very simple to put starbases where I want them, usually right next to one another. However, I can't see the reason for the circle if we are on a grid system.

While I won't say I have exhaustively tested this, in every case I have checked, one pixel of the square containing the planet is all that is needed. In 1.1 (I am running the beta now), it is easy to appropriately place my star bases.
