Andromeda's Logo Wanted

Sorry I havn't got the expertise.

Hi, just wanted to ask around for a Andromeda's Commonwealth logo.... Love the show and love the idea of a commonwealth type of empire battling against dreadlords (Pyrrians), Yor (Kalderran) and Magogs (Dregins).

for those of you who like a challenge, I found this image of the logo in, I admit, low quality (but high Enough to distinguish the details).

I already have said logo along with a bunch of others and portraits pending approval from various sources from many of the popular sci fi franchises.

The serie was canned last season so it might be deficult to obtain aproval and insn't logos fair use (as in copyright fair use) anyway?

I suggest that people read this regarding "fair use:"

Then follow the link here for more information on copyright in general:

I don't see how use of a copyrighted image in a game like this without the creator's permission would be fair use but I am no lawyer.

lol...... this game is moddable which means any sucker with any minimal paint skills can copy and paste the star wars logo into the game if they wanted to, its all good noone is gonna sue you. The difference is if you would SELL that mod or use it in public (commercials etc).

Probably a easier understanding of fair use: Link

Using it for something like thing would be 99% sure to be ruled fair use - the only thing is that you never know for sure unless you get sued (its not one of those areas where there's a it is or isn't... its really only determined by a suit).

UFP logo is in, Tal Shiar is in..do you think permission was obtained from the Roddenberry Foundation or Paramount... doubtful, do you think they care? nope or such logos, images etc...wouldn't be on a million fansites around the globe without said permission too.

Typically speaking copyright only ever becomes an issue when someone is trying to make cash of the use of someone else's copyrighted property, and as that is not the case here..it so isnt likely to be an issue.

The problem in this case would be one of distribution. Sure, you could claim that it is not making anyone any money - that seems right. However, making the logo available for download to the public in a thread like this would be another thing entirely - especially on the forums run by a company that would have to be licensed in order to use the logo themselves in game materials. Fair use usually requires a limited viewership or one that would not "water down" the artwork's value on the commercial market. If you want to test the legal waters, go right ahead. It's not my livelihood or life on the line. Just don't say nobody warned you.

As I say such symbols are already readily available and used on multitudes of fansites without permissions, put on a database like this is no different, no money is being made from it and therefore the chances of the company caring are next to none and even if they did a cease and desist notice would be issued first..so even if the worst and HUGELY unlikely case scenario were to come about its not like a law suit would just be slapped down the logo would be requested to be removed and its availability stopped. A law suit would only occure if the cease and desist notice were ignored

Also as I say there are already copyrighted logos available for people to use in the library.. its not like this one would be the first and we dont even know if it is copyrighted anyway (though it may well be). So it isnt like this one would be setting a precedent.

sorry for all the fuss guys, I simply thought it was fair use because logos of this and Star Trek (both by Gene Rodenberry) are used on Wikipedia with the fair use disclamer... Didn't ment to create a debate on what is or is not fair use. Anyway, I've photoshoped the image into the game with a few "Magic wand" and a transparent background... far from impressive or anything, but hey... better than nothing and I really don't tink any going to bust down my door for this while there's pirating and whatnots going on.

Heres a large version of the andromeda logo...I tried to make the style somewhat 'similar' to the overall galciv2 civilization-badge look. Its got quite a bit of white, and Im not sure of the other colors (kind of 'Terran-esque'), but those things are easy to fix.

Hey, if you're planning on modding GalCiv to an Andromeda universe, have a look at what Robert Hewitt Wolfe (the series creator) had in plan for the show before the producers 'did their own thing':
http://www.rhwolfe.com/Insider%20Info.htm

It's in the Andromeda Coda link at the bottom.

Basically Rev Bem unites the Wayists into a superstate and allies with the Commonwealth against the Nietzscheans on one side and the Magog on the other. Meanwhile the Pyrrians fight the spirit of the Abyss but when they start losing, everyone has to team up.

I think it's perfect for a GalCiv2 Mod!

oh and don't forget to turn the Dominion of Korx into the Free Trade Alliance!
