No widescreen resolution?

I am playing the game on a widescreen laptop. Unfortunately, this means that the entire game is stretched out of proportion. Is there anyway to fix this?

The game supports any resolution your monitor can use. You should be able to match your monitor's native resolution in the graphics options. I have a 19" widescreen LCD, and I run the game at it's native 1440x900 rez, no problem.

Just make sure you don't play it at any lower resolution than 1024x768 32-bit color depth. Other than that, you should be good to go.

Wow, thank you for the quick replies.

I am running my computer at a resolution of 1280x800. The game offers me two resolutions: 1024x768 and 1280x800. Naturally, I have selected 1280x800.

However, the game still appears to be stretched out of proportion. For instance, on the main menu page, the planet in the background doesn't look anywhere near spherical. I know that most planets *are* stretched horizontally to a certain extent, but this seems to go beyond that. Also, the leaders' portraits in the trade screen seem radically stretched.

I suppose I could be mistaken, and this is all just in my head. If it is, I apologize.

However, I have also noticed that whether I run the game in "fullscreen" or "windowed" mode, there is absolutely no difference. I expected the windowed mode to run in, well, a window. You know, with the minimize, resize, and close buttons in the top-right. Or is "windowed" mode something else entirely?

Thank you very much for the support.

Do you have to ALT-TAB once to activate the windowed mode, or something?

I have also noticed that some images are 'streched' when running a wide resolution as stated in #3. I reverted to 1024 x 768 since the 'black frame' does not bother me. You should put your findings in the 'Glitch Report' sticky post.

Sorry, I guess I did not quite understand. The game will play at 1280 x 800, non of the game graphics will be stretched. But some movies, and static images might be, things like the Tech Robots, and the intro screen. Otherwise everything shound size to your screen and actualy show more information and at larger resolutions. As for the stretching of some images, it could not be helped, at least not simply. I tryed not to do it unless there was no better way.

That makes sense.

How about windowed mode not working though? Does it only work for certain video cards, or something?

If you run in windows mode but with full desktop resolution, it'll look the same as fullscreen (for most people).

Ah... I get it! Thanks!

Okay, so I can set the game to the lower resolution and then play it in windowed mode to prevent the game from stretching the cutscenes and such.

Thank you everyone!

Stardock folks -
I am a giant fan, but have a problem - I can only display 720p natively - 1280 x 720 (native HD). [I know offically 768 is the max height.] Believe it or not, the game actually runs pretty well at this resolution - and most of the issues I can work around using keyboard shortcuts etc. (lower portion of screen is off-set by 10-30 pixels, which you can get used to) - save two scenarios which are catastrophic -

~Ship battle animations where the player controls appear at the bottom of the screen. (They do appear, but are not clickable, nor does the keyboard allow for any escape - ie: space, enter, Function keys etc.)

~If auto-save happens to coincide with a GNN event, no keyboard combination (see above) is sufficient to dismiss the news display.

Any hope for a 1280x720 constrained die-hard fan?

Thanks in advance,

- Hoping for resolution magic...

I hope so too...I just bought this and I can't get it to run due to the res requirments. I'm stuck at 1280x720. Can we edit an .ini? Is a patch expected, if not can I get a refund?

Well, you can set options to ensure that you won't have any combat viewer.

Have you try some options to reduce when the GNN report appears?

So far, niether option (hide combat or GNN reporting) seems to work - will need to re-check. Sadly, the fleet combat animations are pretty important for me to understand ship strength etc (plus they are cool...!)... Renewed plea for 720p!

Thanks...
