Heavy CPU usage

I am using the free version of ObjectDock on my laptop (Centrino Duo 1.66GHz/Radeon X1400). But when I have the magnify effect on, the CPU usage goes up high. Needless to say, this is not a good thing when the laptop is on battery. But I do not have the same problem with a more complex effect, such the 3D animation sample in ATI control panel (CPU usage is only a few percent). What gives?

I tried all modes and all engines (GDI, custom).

Try removing the docklets one at a time until the problem goes away. I don't use OD but your thread has been sitting for a bit. Maybe someone else will come along with more info but I have seen this problem over and over on the forums and it is always a docklet causing the problem.

Thanks for the reply Night Train. I'll start troubleshooting. Will update.

I disabled all Docklets and that did nothing. I even went as far as disabling some features (eg, the Taskbar contents) and nothing helps. CPU usage still spikes past 50%.

Under 'Display Properties->Advanced->Troubleshooting' is a hardware accelerator slider.

How is it set?

I don't know, I have no technical knowledge. I tinker. If it's set one way and doesn't work for me I try it another way.

WoW....didn't know there were too many others out there who even knew anything about Spinal Tap....much less about 11 being better than 10.
Over the years I've mentioned 'Spinal Tap' to people and they think I'm on about some kind of surgery.....nice to know I'm not the only 'nut' who knows about them. T'was a great movie spoof about the rock 'n roll industry...but there's a serious album called Break Like The Wind, for Tap fans who aren't aware.

Now, back on topic....cutebunny, if you have a quite a few links to intensive/high usage programs on your dock, it can make your CPU spike upwards. When I first got the free version, I loaded it with links to all my most used proggies/resources and it did the same thing as yours. Once I removed some of those links it behaved alot better, so perhaps you could try doing similarly to bring down your CPU peaks. Hope it all works out for you

cutebunny - Open Taskmgr. Right click on Objectdock process. Click on 'Set Affinity' and un-check all but CPU1 .

Setting affinity to one core didn't help

And no it has nothing to do with an overloaded dock, because I tried to disable all docklets and then reduce the whole dock to a minimal size (only three iocs) and the CPU usage spike is the SAME.

I am the only one with this problem? Maybe it's a core duo exclusive bug? If so, I am upset

At this point I would step outside the community support mode and contact Stardock support. Maybe they have a duo rig they can test on.
