How do I stop planet from continually making ships??

Sorry if this is a noobish question but how do I get a planet's shipyard to stop continuously making the same ship over and over again? First I've clicked on the planet to bring up the planet build screen, then I click on the shipyard link in the top right, then I click on cancel on the ship build screen that comes up but it doesn't stop them from being produced?!!
Even after going into the OPTIONS menu before the game and shutting off the option for having ships continuously build themselves it STILL continues to build them repeatedly?
I realize this may be something that I've missed but I did the tutorial and can't seem to find this answer in the manual either. Perhaps I'm blind or read it too fast in my haste to begin playing and enjoying the game but this is rather vexing.
Anyone have an answer to this? Thanks in advance, I do apologize if this is perhaps too mundane of a question.
