Availability woes.

Yesterday, I was spending the day in our state capitol, Lincoln, and stopped by both Super Walmart and Best Buy. Neither of them had Galactic Civilizations 2 in stock yet. On my way home, I stopped by the Super Walmart in York (a city of 9,000) and that walmart hasn't had Galactic Civilizations in stock yet either.

So I decided to order from the online wholesaler www.gogamer.com, that says they are going to stock the game, and they either don't have it in stock yet or are back-ordered. I'm not sure which yet, as I haven't gotten a response back from them yet.

If you have to play it RIGHT NOW, you could always order from stardock and get the digital download + retail. That way you can download and play it, and receive the hardcopy when they get a chance to ship it.

I think one of the major problems in this process has been a communication problem. The employees at the retailers (Walmart, EbGames, etc) have no idea about the distribution problems caused by the higher-than-expected demand. As a result, they are pretty much just making (uneducated) guesses when asked by customers about availability.

I stopped in a EbGames in Springfield, MO, and checked to see if the box was in. The guy behind the counter said that the boxes weren't in because they weren't overnighted the day of release like they usually are. I explained what I had found out here (about the retail availability problems), and he was amazed that only 50,000 copies had been made initially. He commented that he had received 15 or so calls about the game. I told him about the digital download service at Stardock, and he thanked me, as he now had some more definitive answers for people that asked.

As for myself, I'm still eagerly awaiting arrival (thanks to the el-cheapo shipping option I chose) of my ebgames.com order.
