Um. How do I research shields!?

I'm playing the campaign game.. is it just me or do I not see 'ship shields' as a researchable topic.

I research defenses, and it talks about all three defense types, but then I only see armor as an option to research. Where are the shields and missle defenses?

For that matter, where are the mass drivers and missle weapons?

certain techs aren't available in the early campaign missions.
As you play through them, more and more will be available. Also, they've created them so you "carry over" certain techs to the next campaign, so you don't always have to research the same stuff over and over.

Yeah, I'm playing the campaign as well. It's visible that they made the early missions as some kind of "introduction" to the strategic concepts of the game. Mission 2, for example, will point out to you just how important starbases and resources are Mission 3 is where you get Shield technology.

I think in the campaign there are some restriction (haven't tried it yet).
In a normal game, you just have to follow the tech tree and you'll have the choice over which defense to develop

Thank you very much for your help. I was suspecting as much as I am on the second mission and they do have an introductory sort of feel to them (which is GOOD).
