research tips?

Hello, I'm very impressed with the game, but the research tree is swamping me down! I'm a casual gamer, so please be gentle, which would be a good section of the research tree for general use please? Or any research tips for a noob please?

Many thanks in advance.

No really I don't.

So far reasearching what you want seems to be ok. IE I wanted to go defensive and high trade / diplomacy. I had to look through the tree to see how to do that and it worked....never had to fight a battle. In fact I finally saw a build up of forces with one of my suedo friends...started major production on very heavy defensive ships and the same round I made 5 of them i was notified I was going to win culturally in 10rounds...so have no idea if my defense was needed.

Take a look at the tree...it's not greatly complicated...there are pretty specific paths. There is trouble understanding what exactly the benifits for each tech are. Yeah miniturization helps you put on more stuff but....by what degree? Do you want to spend 10 weeks going to the next step or spend 2 week putting on 3 trade route and boosting trade a few percent. That's where it's tough.

Main thing is to get an idea where the techs are going....then when you encounter a weakness of an race you want to exploit you know where to turn.

Each player will find there own way up the tech tree. It can greatly very with each game, depending on the galaxy condtions, and races. Good role of thumb is to spend some of the early game getting the basics of Trade on comunications. This will alow you to establis good relationships with the other races, and buy you time to get your millitary established.

However. Everyone likes to do things in there own way. It depends on how you want to win (or lose). It would be nice to get peoples stratages from there own lips (Fingers).

The tech tree isn't as daunting as it looks like at first. If you take some time to study it, you will notice that mostly techs from left to right within a row do similar things, just better. As in "factory, better factory, even better factory,..."

Of course there's more to it and there are always exceptions but for a first general idea of the tree it should work.

If you really don't know what you want to research, just sort by cost and take the cheapest (and skip the ones you definitely don't want, like beam weapons when you are concentrating on missiles). This way you will get a very broad approach but you won't forget to research any vital aspect of the game.

I've only played one game of GalCiv II to completion, but I've got a lot of Galciv I under my belt. My stragety has generally been to decide on a strategy (conquest, tech victory, alliance victory, etc...) and focus my research on those areas, but when an otherwise useful tech (say - sensors) comes available and can be researched in 2 or 3 turns, I go ahead and get it. You can often trade techs with your friends and you should. You can also make a fortune selling tech to the independent worlds. I would always sell them all of my tech just before conquering them, just to be sure I got their money too.

Also of note: techs that make your population grow are important to any strategy. Population is the engine for any of these strategies. Also, you will need to at least remain competitive militarily, so you can't ignore your military altogether.

Good Luck!
