Why I'm glad GalCiv2 isn't Moo2

I loved Moo2, its one of my all time favourite games. I bought Moo3 and I was very disapointed, although I did enjoy some of the modded versions of the game.

I especially loved the tactical combat - and although I'm a little disapointed its not in GalCiv2 I can understand it. My greatest Moo2 moment was when I once managed to save one of my Moo2 colony worlds from impending doom against 2 enemy battleships by building 15 or so frigates with a single assault frigate each. Combined with a small fleet of cruisers and destroyers these frigates shuttles captured the enemy battleships - and the battle ended with a victory to me... but I had no remaining original fleet to speak of! All things considered this both speaks for and against tactical combat - exploits against Ai are easy to come up with, but you can have satisfying victories against superior odds by using your brains.

I'm not looking for Moo2.5 (or Moo2 with new graphics) - I'm looking for a new game that takes the best of all worlds and applies them well. GalCiv2 looks like the best game to come out in a long long time in this genre - I confess I didn't really like GalCiv1 because of what was missing from the game. I am looking forward to GalCiv2 because of what it has the original did not (things that are important to me) such as custom races, ship building, detailed combat and large universes.

Personally I don't really care if my ships can be controlled by me as long as the battles are cool and the weapons effects even better (something which moo2 had in 1996). For me there is nothing like watching a cool space battle in action - so I'm hoping the screenshots are as good as they look when applied in real -time

As for multiplayer I'm agnostic on that - even most FPS games don't lend well to the multiplayer experience - whereas for other games such as Massive Assault its a must.

So here's to GalCiv2 and a successful release I hope its all that it looks to be.

well, tactial battles in MoO2 were pretty cool as long as the number of ships was not soo big (2000 doom stars anyone?). sucked especially in Multiplayer sessions cause it took so long.

thats where GC2 will be better at if they eventually add multiplayer with an expansion or patch.

the best part of both worlds would be MoM style tactical combat (e.g. limited customization of ships/heroes and limited amount of troops per army/battle/fleet).

for non-massive multiplayer I think its really time again for 2 things:

#1 a turn based science-fiction strategy game alla GC/MoO/Stars/BoF with decent graphics and game play that can be played via e-mail, LAN, Internet and hotseat

#2 a cooperative multiplayer enabled RPG/FPS Game like System Shock 2.
nothing rocked more than exploring the ships of System Shock, listening to the mad AIs, discovering the fate of the crew and fighting off mutants, cyborgs and zombies together with a friend. when my friend had to cover my back fending off enemies with his PSI abilities or shotgun while I was hacking the security system to disable the alert and security cameras.
