I have the same issue, actually having to download a .bat to make the update screen go away because there's no "disable automatic update check" option in the menus is... disturbing. I'm hopeful that such an advance feature can be implemented in the next update. I think the feature will be enough to make it a major version release, Fences 4.0 > Fences 3 but now you can disable update checks.
