So many questions, easy answers? in Galactic Civilizations I Stardock Forums

I just started playing GalCiv and have enjoyed it immensely. But I don't have tons of time to play it or figure things out that should have been in that pathetic manual. Is there some downloadable file that is more in-depth than the manual? Simple questions like how population affects production. In the game I'm playing one of my larger planets with a big population has only 5 shields in production and I dont know why it isn't much greater. All the sliders are on 1/3. What if you don't need
