Problem solved. For some reason, the icon spacing and icon vertical spacing were set to -28860. I found on the SuperUser forum an entry ( https://superuser.com/questions/1554668/desktop-icons-spaced-out ) where this caused an issue for someone and it was suggested that they reset entries in the Registry at HKEY_CURRE

Ok. First, it seems I will have to solve it without Fences. When I get a normal desktop again, I can then try starting Fences again.
