Move all desktop icons/items to a folder and re-enable Fences. That fixed it for me. Take the items out of the folder until Fences crashes and you will find the culprit that caused it to crash. Sorry for the DF and WE people having issues. Good luck with that one... :-(

This solution worked for me too. Now I need to figure out which icon, out hundreds, is causing this to happen. :-(
I have updated to the latest version of Fences. The software crashes immediately after launching. After ENABLING FENCES the screen blinks a lot, then Fences crashes and a dialog says "Fences has detected that Explorer was not closed properly. As a precaution Fences has been temporarily disabled." Rebooting does not fix it. Uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling does not work either. I have a 4 monitor system with an Nvidia 3080 on Windows 10. Latest patches.&
I was using the Dark Mode theme. I have reintalled, then uninstalled the software again. It did not return Windows to its core settings. I then used S.M.A.C.C. to manually update the text colors to get them back to normal. I have resolved this issue.
I installed WB 10 a few months ago so I could control the appearance of the Windows Explorer window. I needed the main file area to be darker. I installed a dark theme and it worked well for a while. I ran into some issues and had to uninstall WB 10. Today MS pushed the October update to my computer. It allows for a dark theme in Windows Explorer. FINALLY! Here is the rub... Now the fonts in the Windows Explorer are black and the background is dark thanks to the Window
That option does not show up when Fences is installed. The issue isn't that no icons are showing up. The issue is that new icons don't show up. Fences will display them and then they immediately disappear. Shortcuts and files that were on the Desktop prior to the installation show up fine. Its the new ones that are disappearing. Something is screwed up with Fences that is causing this issue. <
It is not the double click thing. I've turned that off. I wound up having to create a new fence and instruct the Fences software to place all new items into that Fence. If I don't do this the new file, when save to the Desktop, will briefly appear on the Desktop and then it disappears despite still being on the desktop.
New issue after recent re-installation. The items saved to my Desktop are not showing up, but are there in File Manager. I can see the items when using the File Manager or any other dialog box that allows be to view the Desktop folder. The icons do not appear anywhere while Fences is enabled. Any ideas?
