OK, how do I disable them? Is that an option on the Main Menu I am missing?

I just downloaded GalCivI onto my laptop, apparently without any problems. I have a new laptop; Core2Duo with 1.6 gig processor, 2 G of Ram, and an integrated video card with 128 Mb of video memory running on Vista Basic. The game runs fine until there is a battle between ships or between ships and a starbase. Battle sequences can take up to five mintes! I really like the game, but have to see some improvement. What gives with my setup?
