Forever War in Single Player Stardock Forums

I am new to SoaSE. I am playing 1v1 on a small map vs AI We are both TEC. Are fleets are about the same size - 3-4 capital ships, 10-15 carriers, 20-30 frigates. Battles seem long. Capital ships engage each other, causing damage very slowly. Is this right? Am I missing something, or are capital ships in this game very poor at hurting each other?
