I found the Bay 12 forums a good place to find decent games like this, and that's where I found Aurora: http://aurorawiki.pentarch.org/index.php?title=Main_Page It's a sci-fi 4X game, no graphics, extremely deep and complex. It allows you to design and build your own ships from scratch, and like DF it's quite sandboxy. For example I created a game with no enemies just so I could get to grips with
