On the other hand, I had a game where I had 4 life shards, and that made healing one of the more powerful spells in my arsenal. Essentially, as long as healy mcgee stood far away from the badguys and had mana, armor mcgee was invincible.

Kill the slaver does this for me. In addition, I chose to hire the giant the first time, and then the slaver fight event was given to me again when I returned the girl to the farm. The second time I killed him.
Note that it is possible to get counterattacks as skills on characters, it's just not common/ubiquitous anymore.
