Star Control Licensing Cost Question in Future Stardock Games Stardock Forums

I read that the Star Control prequel won't have the races from earlier games. If that's the case, why spend all of the money to acquire the license and naming rights? Why not make a similar game to Star Control 2 with an ancient race of a different name that previously inhabited the galaxy and left for a mysterious reason?
