When GalCiv II: Twilight of the Arnor comes out and you see someone cheesing the high scores in the tournament mode, that is just a glimmer of the horror multiplayer would have brought.
One person's cheese is just another person's maximum efficiency strategy. I look forward to maximizing the upcoming tournament mode. I'd also enjoy multiplayer - but I'm thankful the AI never quits and is always willing to play another game no matter how badly it did last time. I'm not sure
Iconian AI, do they ever amount to anything?
Well they can, in the same way that 1000 monkeys with typewriters with an infinite amount of time would eventually randomly produce Shakespeare. Is it probable that they will do anything on any difficulty level? No. Worst. Race. Period. IMO anyway, - Wyndstar

... I hope you are OK and got evacuated safely. I've lived in San Diego for a few years now, and my condo is filled with friends who were displaced by the mandatory evacuations. If you are evacuated, be sure to take copies of any insurance policy with you. The devastation is so massive its going to end up being like pulling teeth to cash in those policies, so you better have proof. I'm not trying to talk down the insurance companies, I used to work for an insurance company - but thei
Ahh i except this most worthy challenge.....
I expected no less from a gentlemen of your breeding.
she is more powerful than you give her credit for, she will kill her own spiders...
Never for a moment did I mean to imply that the fair Cari is incapable of killing the vile spiders that ambush her. But even at the best of times eliminating the arachnids is a distasteful task. I will endeavor to relieve such unnecessary nastiness from fair Cari, all
Cari, will you marry me?
Neilo, I challenge you to a duel for Cari's affections. Really Cari, I would make an excellent partner. I have many fine qualities, including: 1) The ability to kill spiders for you 2) The willingness to cheer for the Lions in your presence I mean, what more could you ask for? - Wyndstar
Hey, they won yesterday.
Word is they are going to win 10 this season. Think that will be enough to take the division? - Wyndstar
Well, I am going to respectfully disagree and take the other side of this argument. I typically play with all random settings. I have barely noticed a planet decline (I've only played two games, so small sample size) - and I never quite know what setting the random generator gave me. However, planets were already increased from DL to DA. One of the keys to an evolving game like this is learning to adapt. How many threads over the last year have complained that range is too easy to c
Oh, I so need to clear some time to be a beta tester for this. It sounds so cool! Like Iztok, probably my biggest concern is with adding so much, will the AI be able to get the most out of the new system and all of the new options. But that's what testing and feedback is for, right? - Wyndstar
I think everybody loves economy and morale bonuses of 20+ to start with? But it barely measures when the AI gets +100 to +200 economy to start out with. You need it just to get your foot in the door. - Wyndstar
I would also like to echo your sentiments. Here here Vamphaery for your acknowledgement and Stardock for all of your continuing fine work. - Wyndstar
Wow, this is a great change. Seems those all lab/stock market with no morale building strategies are going to be a little less optimized under the new system. Which is a good thing. Nothing is more fun than having to develop new strategies. Like a few others, I'm most concerned about custom opponents (I like to try and design the meanest buggers possible). With the different trees, are you now going to have to choose the AI script that matches the tech tree script you choose? Or, c
I use the same morale strategy as Mumblefratz. He plays DL, I play DA... so it works under both versions. Before you break down the numbers, it seems like there might be a reason for high approval. However, after the initial few turns of the game where you get a basic tax base - you never really need approval for 50 out of 52 weeks. This is the so called "counter-intuitive" part of the morale/tax workings of GalCiv2. TheDoomBringer - try playing without any morale building
I prefer to think of it more as burlesque.... Wyndstar
Why aren't balanced ships effective? Because they don't have enough defense to survive against "all attack" fleets, and they don't have enough attack to scratch "mostly defense" fleets. The farther you get in the tech tree, the more this is true. Good luck, Wyndstar
While I generally agree with Iztok, I think in the endgame you really want a mix of solo all attack ships backed up by fleets of 5 huge hulls with an emphasis on defense. Using your all attack ships as suicide missiles to weaken AI fleets and then cleaning up the remainders with a large def heavy fleet will limit your casualties and keep you gaining exp. Hope that helps, Wyndstar
Yes, they loaded 1 hp cargo hulls with guns. Then the gun to hp ratio made those ships "appear" the strongest in the final display. And as mentioned, I lost a ship to an attack 6 freighter the Drengin used. I don't know why the AI thinks this is a good way to design ships. They also built normal combat ships, but a normal combat ship isn't going to achieve a 6 to 1 weapon to hp ratio, so those aren't listed. Plus, those idiot cargo hulls were ambushing my constructors. I'm glad you
But the question is, would players be interested in another 2 or 3 or more expansion packs in the future? (or put another way, would there be enough players interested to pay for the cost of development)? Well, that is hard information to get from an informal online poll I would think. I, like most here, would of course continue to buy expansions for this game, it is an all time classic. Purge (reply #10) really has it right on though. You kn
Attack values of 2000? Fleet or ship? One dreadlords dreadnaught, had an attack value of over 2k on the ship. Going in with a fleet with 4k defense was important because I needed one ship to survive, otherwise the dread could have endlessly killed my guys relying on the tie rule. 2k attack, and only 150 hps.... the only key was having a survivor. How many Hyperion Shrinkers / Military Resources / Racial Bonuses did they h
No. But I wouldn't waste time with the colony rush. Prepare your invasion fleets now. Good luck. - Wyndstar
Visuals and animations are key part of any gameplay. That is the foundation from which you start building. I could not possibly disagree more with a statement regarding game design. "Visuals" are not "gameplay"... and hence are not a key part. The two top selling games of all time are Starcraft and Tetris, go ahead and load them up, graphics are not the main feature. Those games have a deceptively large amount of depth to them, though. <b
Dreadlords are trickier, but not impossible. First off, 300+ attack is nothing. I routinely see and build ships with values of 800+. See my Combat Balance thread for instance. The best way to take out the dreadlords is to get anything so that their worlds are in view, and then fill every tile they have with spies. Suddenly attrition starts working against them. The r/p/s still applies to dreadlords, yo
Sigh, Iztok and Kyro both make good points. I've pointed this out before elsewhere, but hopefully this will help you. In DA, there is a rock paper scissors to fleet design to take out any enemy. Against an individual attack ship, you want to use a fleet of defensive ships. Against a fleet of defensive ships, you want to use a fleet of offensive ships. Against a fleet of offensive ships, you want to use an individual attack ship. Balanced designs are typically beaten by al
