Sometimes you can also take the lemons and turn them into lemonade. For instance, the much hated JK event was actually to my advantage. Since it seems to take planets in proportion to the size of the empires, it took a nice chunk out of the leader's empire. Since they were HUGE, but lagging behind in military tech, i took the opportunity to invade them and essentially grabbing 3 planets from the leading empire without the nasty diplomatic repercussions :P

Well, I've played SE-V, and I can't really say I was very impressed. I think the main problem was that it was meant to be modded and multiplayed. Because the stock game was really quite flavorless, buggy and boring with an AI that was really just window dressing. There was however a HUGE variety of things you could do in terms of stellar manipulation, race picks, technology and diplomacy, which is why I suspect that it was really just a framework for other people to mod it.
I'm also a big fan of Asimov, but for more recent authors I'd go with Iain Banks. The Culture series of novels is very well written along with invoking some very interesting thoughts about the future.
Finished another game. The dread lords are freakin' SCARY. Whenever I see a ship that has a "..." as a weapon power, I really should consider running. Far away. D:
Well, I just finished my second game. Smaller map, turned up the AI. Still not high enough, but it's definately significantly smarter this time. I fear the day I turn it up to tough D:
I base this on the fact that at our tech LL right now it will take us 50,000 to get to the alpha Centauri system. Alpha Centauri is 4.37 LY away. Soo... even if we're asuming that we're going at a measly .1c that's still just 40ish years away...
Holy crap that was a really long post. Sorry XD
My exams finally finished, and I wanted to treat myself with something. Not trusting myself to purchase DA during an academic term, and I have a co-op term next semester, I figured that now would be a good time to see if Galciv was really as great as everyone says. WOW. Were they right. I got it yesterday and set up a game. I didn't want to read the manual (who does?) so I just set up a game. I made it HUUGE so that I would have plenty of space and time to figure things out and
