A button exists for the major races. I can't attack because I'm an ally of the race. What a catch.

Can't break an alliance in Galactic Civilizations II GalCiv2 Forums

After creating an alliance with one of the minor races plus initiating some trade routes, i've decided to break the alliance in order to eliminate the race (cruel, I know). The problem is I don't get the option of breaking the alliance, as I would in the major races, but instead I always get the 'trade embargo' option, which somehow cannot be checked? What could be the problem? How do I break that disturbing alliance?
