Bethseda release the 1.6 patch for Skyrim this week. Steam updated it automatically even though I have the option set to 'do not update this game'. My level 40+ save game is hosed with graphics issues. Yes, there's offline mode, but it can take weeks for me to play a character. If you start the game from the icon and Steam is not already in off-line mode, you are locked out of the game until the patch is done. There's no way to stop that. IM

I for one have given up on all DD systems except GOG.com. I've left the multiplayer scene and only play offline/single player modes. The only game I have that uses Steam is Skyrim and it has been a PITA from my perspective. With RPG's (or with any game for that matter), I prefer to apply patches/mods before I start a new game. Even though I tell Steam not to patch the game, someone, Steam or the publisher can override my settings and force the updates.&nbs

What do you think will happen to all of Steams great deals once they have driven all the other competitors out of business. If all the games start requiring Steam, then there is no reason to buy the game from any place other than Steam. Once the competition is gone, no reason to have the sales. :( sorry I'll pass. I can't help it if most PC gamers can't think past the end of their nose.

Options...options are good. Just add a checkbox to the game options and allow random events to be turned off (I know, I know, it not that easy for the person writing the code). Those that like them can have them, those that don't can get rid of them. And for those of us that are really warped, add a scaling factor so we can increase their frequency. :)

Another question is, who owns the data? Data on my hard drive requires a court order to seize and access. As near as I can tell, data stored in the 'cloud' or on a storage services servers does not have this protection, authorities can just ask for access without your consent or knowledge. Yes it is a good game...if you have patience. It's definitely not Freelancer though. And it definitely not everyone's cup of tea. There is a very large learning curve and it takes a while to build up the funds to get the good ships, etc. When starting out, it can take 10-20 Hrs of playing to get to the point where the game moves from working to fun.
