Is discussion of the Beta covered at all by an NDA? I was thinking about writing a review of the most recent beta, but I wasn't sure if it was permitted.
I don't think it needs humor so much as it just needs personality. Who here who's played Starcraft can't recall at least a dozen of of the lines various units would say when you selected them or gave them orders?
Last night I played a game and saved it about 2 hours in. This morning when I loaded the game up my ships and structures had all shifted to different planets/asteroids or two different positions around the planets that the originally were at.
I'm not really sure if this is feasible or practical to implement, and it's definitely not needed in the game for any gameplay purposes, but it would be a really cool effect if it's possible. It would be cool if the sides of planets not facing a star would be dark, like in real life. On unsettled planets they could be completely dark and on settled planets they could be covered in lights. The density of the lights could depend on the population of the planet. Just an idea...
I agree, the battles are rather static unless you're directly managing your fleet. The noticeable exception is the fighters and bombers, which are constantly moving. It would be neat if ships would maneuver more in combat, even if just for visual effect. However, at this point, I'm not so sure it needs to be a priority for the developers. There are plenty of other gameplay balances and tweaks that ought to be addressed first before they get to addressing this particular issue.
Well, it seems to me that at this point, the core mechanics are more or less finished for the game. I remember seeing somewhere one of the devs said that beta 2 wasn't meant to be fun, it was just meant to make sure that the game worked (and I'm assuming not just technically but in a sense that there aren't any units or upgrades that just totally break the gameplay). So for beta 3, I would expect that the devs will be moving on to making the game fun, making sure things are well balanc
I'm not so sure this would work very well, even as a mod. It's much more important having well balanced sides in an RTS than in a TBS like Galactic Civ 2, especially if you're going to try and make each race unique. With custom units it would be very easy to unbalance the entire game.
Here's an idea for an alternative between open phase and phase lane gameplay. Still restrict interplanetary travel and interstellar travel to lanes, but instead of having the lanes preset at the beginning of each game, let the player choose where they want the lanes to go by building gates that ships can jump through. Once a gate is built it can't be destroyed and can be used by any civilization. This would create a strategic decision for the player. Too few lanes and you hamper your mobilit
