I was thinking about how I could make a more robust fleet production and it occured to me: there always seems to be a "lead ship" that gets all the fire. Once that one is destroyed, then they move onto the next target and proceed to burn it down. In that sense, is there a way to designate who the lead ship is? Do they automatically target the largest vessel? If that was possible, I was hoping I could try making a fleet with a giga

I've encountered this bug before as well. Sometimes I can't group certain ships together, even tiny hulls. I haven't tried reproducing it, but the difference was that my two ships grouped together were lv25 while the one that wouldn't group with them was still lv0. I had thought that ships with big level gaps couldn't group.
You just have to beat them down a bit. Invade a planet or two and persuade a friendly race to attack them by giving them money and tech. Be sure to use some espionage and check which planets are their manufacturing planets. Get those down ASAP. Also, if you aren't already, check their ships to see what types of weapons they're using and counter it with a good defense against it. You usually don't have to sacrifice speed if you just put full defense against their weapons instead of spr
