gc2.sdc

Hello,

Ive played GC2's beta since I first spotted it whilst wibbling aroung on the world wide wibble, got to say that its very good for its stage in development.

Now the problem: And, its all mine. On Christmas evening my house caught fire, destroying all the computers in the house, Including the one that I had GC2 installed on. My family bought a laptop to share until we are on our feet again. Ive had GC2 running fine on this machine. Came to update it today and no luck.

Ive tried everything that I can, and still no luck

Actions so far:

1] Uninstalled GC2, clened up after it. Deleted its directory, the gc2 directory in my documents folder, and its entries in the registry.

2] Uninstalled SDC, reinstalled using the beta option. I also cleaned the registry, manually, and also user application data areas and its directory in program files.

3] Attempted to install GC2, no luck. Tried the above again, thinking I'd missed something. Still no go.

It seems to hang on a particular file when downloading, gc2.sdc. I've searched on the internet for any mentions of this file, and I got a hit, basically telling me to make sure that sdc's server was set to US - California. Tried again after that, nothing, changed it to US - Chicago, sill the same error.

Checked to see if my firewall was in anyway stopping it, nope. Checked AV for script settings, the same. Disbled both, nothing.

Here's the error log:

Any ideas?

Am I going into it more than I should, and gc2.sdc is really missing from the server, for whatever reason?

Thanks,

Nathan.

Hey, just saw two things:
C:\Documents and Settings\AngleWyrm\Local Settings\Temp\sdcentral
contains a file labelled gc1.sdc, NOT gc2.sdc -- could this be a typo?

Secondly, the error log states that Stardock loaded:
C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\data\public\gc2\production\gc2.xml
just before the problem, which appears to be a file list.

I notice that the data is in a folder labelled ...\gc2\PRODUCTION\gc2.xml
could that be a problem?

If someone could upload the file somewhere and provide a link that would be great.

Or even better would be for Stardock to fix the problem

Just did a Windows XP System Restore. Afterward, when I started GC2, it asked me for my product registration (email and serial number) -- odd yeah? -- and after looking those up and getting an ok box, it immediately crashed to desktop. SmartException report sent.

I then ran Stardock Central, which updated itself to current version (2.20.359 build 103) and it said I have the old 0.81a.007 version of GalCiv2! Yes! Probably some mangled mix of the two. So I ran the update to 0.81a.015 (bloody long wait at 30~70KB/sec) , activated auto-archive on application update just in case.

It says I have multimedia pack v0.28.032 and that v1.0.039 is available. Gonna test first (as soon as the DL finishes)

YES! It works!
I am still missing the galaxy graphics for the initial setup screen though, and Research-Victory=disabled; the window above where you pick galaxy size is empty. Tried updating multimedia to v1.0.039, but it didn't seem to do anything other than change the version number.
Anyway...Back to designing cool-looking ships

Using windows system restore, worked for me to, with basically the sames problems. Although I had to reinstall SDC, but after a nice long download of GC2 I now have the game working again.

Thanks for the idea AngleWyrm.

I was having problems getting the Mutlimedia, mind you, It has jumped from 0.28.035 to 1.0.0.40. Dont mind that, its working fine all over now.

Ditto, the u/g on Stardock to .16 from .15 seems to have fixed the url problem.

MM though is still down. I was reading in another thread that it maybe due to the fact that the gamma testers are using it therefore in my mind it maybe simply a compatibility issue.

Damn I love paint... you can change stuff to png files so easy!

Back on track, upgrade worked fine, beta wise and I appreciate the hardwork that Cari and others did helping me think it through in chat last night.

This won't take long, I think.

Seems it is working on California Server with DL of +/- 70K but on Chicago i get the following error for the Game :

Extract: E:\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Base\Gfx\Ethics\Ethic_Neutral_Tiny.png_ 1 | 01/09/2006 14:43
Extract: E:\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Base\Gfx\Ethics\Undecided_Large.png_ 1 | 01/09/2006 14:43
Extract: E:\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Base\Gfx\Explosions\Explosion01.png_ 1 | 01/09/2006 14:43
Extract: E:\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Base\Gfx\Explosions\Explosion02.png_ 1 | 01/09/2006 14:43
Extract: E:\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Base\Gfx\Explosions\Thumbs.db_ 0 (file not found)
Result: Installation failed (27)

It downloads everything at +/- 450K but the extraction of files is failing.

Further Multimedia is failing instantly on both the California Server and the Chicago Server

-- [Installation] ---------------------------------------------------
Download: E:\Stardock\SDCentral\data\public\gc2\production\gc2_Multimedia.xml 1
Load: E:\Stardock\SDCentral\data\public\gc2\production\gc2_Multimedia.xml 1
Download: E:\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\gc2_Multimedia.sdc 1
Extract E:\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\gc2_Multimedia.sdc 0 (sdczip error code 1)
Result: Installation failed (21)

OK, this is starting to tick me off too.

I've downloaded & installed everything BUT the gc2_multiMedia.sdc file.  It keeps failing no matter what server I point it at, same error: -14 Invalid URL.  No matter what I choose, this happens.

and of course the game won't play.  NOTE: this is a clean install -> I downloaded the game using SDC.
