"Dread Lords" Expansion?

Possible? Not possible?

Hi everyone. The name's Aulhel. I'm new to the Galactic Civilizations thing, and only heard of this recently. I may have no idea what the heck I'm talking about, so if I say anything stupid, feel free to whack me over the forehead with a two-by-four.

I've got a few questions:

1. If, at some point in the future, there is the demand for it, would there ever be a mini-expansion/release that would allow people to play as thje Dread Lords? Okay, okay, so I crave the ubers. Yes, I am aware that they are slow to build (if the Developer journals are any indication). If not, could this somehow be modded by the community?

Which brings me to the second question...

2. How moddable is Galactic Civilizations II going to be, and, if this information's not too confidential, how would modifications be created? What tools would be used, and would they be standalone programs like hexidecimal ("hex") editors or would custom tools be created?

3. It is said that the game will be shipped without copy protection, but there is no fear of any long-term theft because of an update system requiring serial registration keys. IS there any fear that these serial numbers might be stolen or that someone might create a key generator?

They would not only need my serial number but also my Drengin.net account logon and password to use the serial for anything....

RE: point 2:

Most of the GC2 data is in XML format, so it should be very easy to modify if you so desire. You can do so with a plan text editor or off-the-shelf XML editor. Or I'm sure someone will build and release an editor made just for GC2, as was done with GC1. Other than the game data itself, the entire interface can be modified using stardock's DesktopX software, the textures can be edited freely in a graphics program, etc. There's not a whole lot as far as variable data and graphics that can't be changed.

In terms of modding:

Graphics are PNG (standard format)

Models are .X (standard)

User Interface is .dxpack (DesktopX -- free download).

Test is in XML

It may be one of the most moddable strategy games ever.

Haha... bring on them Jaffa

It's quite amasing how much a dedicated team of mods can achieve with a good engine.

( I remember those total conversions for Escape velocity... or the Max Payne mods. Sweet )

I remember the original DOOM from the early 90s was not only a great FPS but one of the first moddable games. The numerous mods created by the fans of the game greatly expanded the game and cost the developer, ID nothing. Anyone who releases a game today that is not moddable is really shooting themselves in the foot! I'm looking forward to trying the mods for GalCiv2 that are sure to follow!
