yrag....here's one for ya.....

yrag....here's one for ya.....

Last night....I had to reboot....[it happens]...

When I did my keyboard failed to be 'seen' in windows....aka...I couldn't type in my logon pass.  [there was no 'flash' of KB lights, though the numlock light was on].

If I then tried the caps lock or similar...it'd cycle once or twice then fail to respond....[mouse worked, though].

KB was fine in boot/bios...only stopping in 'Doze.

It gets stranger....

Tried another KB...also PS2...also no luck.

I have two HDs...same OS...both in caddies...other is simply 'older'...did a swap....and here I am...obviously working.

Did I mention 'stranger'?

Tried a re-install of XP via the CD....that was fun....till it asked for the CD Key....yes, you guessed....

I did a Drive-image restore that was about 2 days old....overwriting the original 'C'....and rebooted.

Nope...same thing.

I have another Image...about a week older...maybe worth a try....next 'option', perhaps.

Only theory I have is either it's a low-level bootsector virus halting keystrokes [bit far-fetched] or it's a physically damaged HD 'sector' that just happens to be where the PS2 or keyboard registry/drivers/files is located...and an image overwrite still hits the same data on the same bad 'sector'....equally far-fetched.

I really don't believe the image could have had the same issue [as software error]...but I guess it's possible.

One quaint idea is to try a USB keyboard...and see if 'Doze can notice the change and respond correctly [but I don't have one - yet].

The upshot of all this....no matter how clever you think you are with backups, etc...when Windows has a brain-fart and won't even read your keyboard....you're well and truly knackered....;p

...if you mean that I'd lost my XP CD key....THAT wasn't the problem....[I have it]...it was the sudden realisation that I COULD NOT input it....as the keyboard was not functioning, anyway....

opps, my dumb... Ug sorry, not mean to say dumb thing. Please forgive Ug, he only cave guy.

The abstraction Wizard has fried my PSU...so I'm now on the wife's machine.

Mine's in pieces again....gotta wait for the shops to open [it's New Years day....bloody typical] to get me a new one.

I thought it was the PSU fan stalling the PSU functioning...but I swapped out the fan and it worked in another case...so it's the PSU supply to the fan...and if the fan don't go neither dose the PSU.

So...

Tomorrow I'll get me a nice new 500 or 600 watt one...to replace the 3 or 4 year old 400w one.

Funny thing is...a mate's bringing his machine around tomorrow....and it sounds like the same problem....PSU isn't 'S'ing.....

Well, you sure don't mess around when you decide to have computer issues, Jafo...............

I guess the computer wanted a New Year's celebration also....

Odd, I had to do a restore a couple of days ago. I got flattened by some 'unknown' virus... I'd been merrily surfing when Spybot popped up telling me I'd got some spyware trying to be installed, stopped that... Then I had a message that mbrbt.exe would like to run... stopped that. Did some research, can't find mbrbt.exe anywhere via Google, Symantec etc... except it was there in my Windows\System32 folder. Ran an AVG scan, which picked up mbrbt.exe as altered, as well as one of my system files being changed. Spybot, AdAware and MS AntiSpyware all picked up all sorts of stuff (it was clean the day before). Cleaned that out, but couldn't get rid of mbrbt.exe...

So, I restored from back-up and everything is back to normal. Still can't find out what mbrbt.exe was...

Meanwhile...XP re-install in the P3.... If I have to go to a 4th...and Win ME....that'll be when I call it quits and take up golf....

Well...there you go... Managed to repeat the error in Terry's machine... reloaded XP...then screwed it with 'System suite'.....just like before... At least I now know what proggy was causing the dramas....

I'm thinking maybe Terry should be working on her on machine. Did she not see what you did to yours?

Nobody would want to see me try golf.
I'd miss the hole more times than Jafo screws his PCs.

Well....MY machine is just fine and dandy...been, oh, days even...and still OK....

But...

My friend's comp....the one that also blew a PSU....

replaced the PSU....booted 'OK'......

Then it locks up  [it was doing that before the PSU died, too]

requires a reset...or cold boot....then locks up again.....after about 2 or 3 minutes.

Ditto in safe mode

swapped out the TV card...unplugged the cd and dvd IDE ....tried another agp card..... disabled onboard sound.... swapped/removed ram sticks....

Nothing....

Though I DID notice....a few times...at lockup, the ram was VERY hot....at one end more than the other.

Tried alternate ram BIOS settings...including safest, etc....still no luck.

Only assumption left...it's 'possibly' a heat issue with the CPU [dusty]...but bios says 35c...

or...

most likely...MoBo is fubarred.

Forgot....if it was a 'spike' that took out the PSU...could'a taken out the MoBo too....one fell swoop...
